I am looking to make some informal target loads that will be a little less punishing than full house 180 gr. hunting bullets.

Has anyone had any experience loading the 110 grain bullets for 30-06? I would like to have them go about 2800-3000 fps.

I would like to know if they seemed to be accurate enough. I have a Ruger M77 MK II and so accurate for that rifle (with me behind the stock) is 1.25" at 100 yds?

Any comments appreciated. Also comment on the 125 gr bullets too, if you have some insight.

Thanks,
John L

Hi John l...Yes I have loaded some Sierra 110 gr HP Varminters with 61.0 gr of H4831SC and WLR primer. Did just a little under 3000fps, but were a little wild out there at 100 and 200 yards. They were fired from a Browning .30-06 A-Bolt with 22 inch barrel. I haven't had time to go back and try a different combination as of yet. Someone else may have had better luck with other powders. I even tried them in my .30-30 win using 39.0 grs W-748 and CCI200 primers and got a whoppin' 2400+ fps. But, again, spread all over the target. Maybe if they were slowed down a bit.....If you go to it. Let us know how it turns out.
Remember. These were near maximum loads and you should start a little lower anyway for safety....

Yes,
I do a lot of pistol reloading on a dillon 550. I know what you are saying about velocities and erratic bullets. It is amazing to see what happens to accuracy when you increase or decrease velocity. It is maddening to try to come up with a load simply because there are so many powders and then powder amounts to choose from. wish me luck.........

I've done it, with very poor accuracy no matter what I tried. It is my opinion that the average -06 is set up for 180 grain bullets and the twist rate is just not what you need for the light bullets. Some of the newer -06 rifles seem to like the light bullets a little better but I have not seen one shoot well with bullets less than 125 grains, and most want 150 grains before they will perform.

Hummm....HSMITH. That was the assumption that I had made. My A-Bolt does very well with Sierra 165gr SBT Gamekings and 180gr SBT Gamekings.

Yes It can be done

Years ago when I was a teenager in high school I was invited to be on my State National Guard rifle team and they gave me thousands of rounds to practice with a jeep and gas credit card and cut orders to get me out of school to represent them at military base matches around the state and the State big Bore Championships. In pulling the 150 gr bullets I found 50 grains of 4895 powder and to make my ammo in to varmint loads I just stuck 110 grain JSP bullets in and tramped around the boonies and mountains of California burning up the thousands of rounds of ammo they gave me.

Nowadays I have a stash of Calif Saeco 4 cavity molds and some with a .30 caliber bevel base 120 grain mold I designed to use free tire weights like I did with all my molds and I shoot those 120 gr cast bullets in a 30-30, a Krag, Carbine, Garand and a Ruger .30 Carbine pistol now sold. So a jacketed 110 gr bullet and a cast 120 gr bullet is fine for varmints on my family ranch and the California Boonies when a youngster supported by the National Guard.

I had a great time.

Years ago, when I lived in Oklahoma, and used to shoot prairie dogs I did it. (Does anyone know if Ft. Sill still allows shooting of these varmints?)

I think that I use the Hornady's.

They were plenty accurate enough to hit the dogs out to about 250 yards.

Then I bought a 22-250 and quit using the '06 for varminting.

I just started reloading .308 and was hoping to have a similar round in addition ot 150 partitions for hunting and 168 SMK for targets.

I did load some test V-MAX 110 Gr test batches on top of IMR 4895, but haven't got a chance to use them yet.

Tagging along on this thread...was wondering how good a varmint round they'd make in .308 Win.

My best groundhog run was with the '06 and 110 gr. Sierra bullets. My favorite powder was IMR 4895. The same with the 125.
