12.7x44r brass and dies

I had to look that up. 12.17×44mm R (rimmed) is the civilian centerfire version of the Norwegian/Swedish 12.17×42mm / 12.17×44mm RF (rimfire) for the Remington 1867 rolling block. My thanks for calling this bit of history to my attention.

Wikipedia:
Centerfire 12.17×44mmR cases are available, but a more cost-effective way to acquire cases is to cut .50 Alaskan cases down to 44mm total length.[7]

I have read but not confirmed that some of the Swedish rifles in 12.7x44r can use .50-70 brass. Might be worth investigating further.

For brass I use 50 Alaskan, works well. Maybe hard to find at times but is much easier to find than 12.7 or 50-70 brass. Dies in 12.7 or 50-70 maybe the hardest thing to find. You could also post on the black powder accessory buy/sell section.

Dies and brass for 50/70, while not exactly common, are not in the unobtainium category. Starline makes brass. RCBS makes dies and shell holders. Your average reloading supplier who caters to the modern arms reloader might not carry them in inventory. Outfits like Buffalo Arms generally keep them in stock.

I use .50-70 dies with cut down starline .50 Alaskan cases. .50-70 is ballistically very similar but brass is enough different that it doesn’t usually work in the Swede rolling blocks.
