Can anyone recommend affordable, quality (consistent) shotshells for trap and skeet? Any experience with Wolf 12 ga. target loads? What about Kent Cartridge?

If your going to later reload, spend the extra money for the Win or Rem Target loads. You are investing in hull this way. IIRC I last paid $4.49 for box ofWinchester Target loads at Sports Authority and Academy Sports. These folks often give a case price. These will easily reload a dozen times. I forget what discount I received fro buying 2 cases.

NOT reloading: Again buying local to avoid shipping from above folks the Federal Value packs perform best for me as far as patterns.[# MP 12 8]

Dove and Quail loads from 7/8oz and on up run about $3.29 or so here depending on time of year. So for a $1.20 more ( thereabouts) one can reload a dozen times and the reloads run less - say ~ $3 a box with hard shot giving top quality performance over the Dove / Quail loads.

Read: ~$3 one gets what they pay from $4.50 and up for the same target loads.

Some folks just go ahead and invest in a Mec Single stage, beg/ pay for hulls, buy components and in no time they are using target quality loads that perform best in their gun. Affords more shooting, meaing they improve shooting faster and with more fun.

Heck...go in with a friend and split the costs...used reloader from the range always seems to be someone whom started this way is upgrading to a progressive ( though I always kept my single stages) , want ads, garage sales...Mec has parts and excellent service.

Two, three guys split up the costs...as time goes on each can then better afford to use saved ammo monies to buy their set up.

Heck some day you may have 6 guys using the 8 reloaders in any of 4 gauges in your place kicking out loads during cold wet rainy days ...the garage ( where they tell me folks are supposed to park vehicles )- have a cache of loads in 4 gauges in cases, three deep all along the wall and as high as can for safety. ...I know a fella or two that have done this...;)

The qucker you unload the pallet of reloading components...the easier it is to walk around the pallet...eventually getting rid of pallet...to facilitate stacking....:p

Get the target loads in Win or Rem. If you don't plan to reload you usually can sell them for 2 to 6 cents a piece depending on gauge. 2 cents for 12ga, 5-6cents for 28ga. Just think that's an extra .50cents off the box of 12ga shells if you can pick them up for $4.50 or less when you buy a case. Gander Mt. just had them on sale and Dick's Sporting Goods in my area.

I say what Steve (sm) said. Listen to knowledge, I have personally proven it saves time, money, aggravation and time. Time is mentioned twice for good reason, if you are like me you can throw money at it just as easy or easier than time and still get nowhere. Quality TIME makes all the difference.

There's over 20 different shell makers marketing target and field loads in hte US now. Makers range from Third World and former Soviet Bloc countries to our own old favorites. Quality ranges widely, but all of it goes boom on demand and produces a pattern of sorts.

Top ammo is quite consistent. It's made with that in mind, rather than the bottom line. A reloader can make the same quality ammo using top components for less than $3 a box. My little single stage setup paid for itself in a couple weeks. After close to 12K rounds, it's still perking along nicely.

A couple buddies can split the costs to soften the impact.

I usually order my ammo by the case through the local range. I place the order with them and we both benefit from the volume pricing. I prefer the Remington STS light loads, as I can shoot them all day long without any recoil sensitivity.

I will not reload 12 ga. It is not worth the cost, once time is factored into the equation. The $3/box costs do not include the oppurtunity costs for the time involved. It takes me 5 minutes to order 10 cases of ammo, and about 10 hours to load that much. 10 hours work is a lot of money at any billable rate.

I've had good experience with the winchester and federal bulk packs that others have recommended. My scores don't change very much when I switch over to AA or STS ammo - of course, that's more a comment on me than the ammo, I'm sure :).

In my part of Texas Estate is local and thier competition loads are acceptable, running inthe $3.25 a box range.

Remington STS #9 pattern best in my current gun.

Win AA Sporting Clays are fine loads.

Win Promos are available at Wal*Mart for less than $3.00 per box and are okay, especially when they were on mark down for $1.25 a box...#7.5 shot, but at that price bought a cart load for practice and shoot twice
