Hey , anyone handled one of these?

http://www.winchesterguns.com/prodinfo/catalog/detail.asp?cat_id=512&type_id=050&cat=012C

I bring this up because - this is NOT just for Upland Game ! :D

See at one time Remington made a "Bird Special" English stock and 23" bbl.

Today Remington only offers [ 2004 Catalog] a 21" bbl for the 1100 Synthetic Fully Rifled Cantilever Scope mount deer (SN 25363) Or the 1100 LT-20 Youth Synthetic ( SN 25363) and similar offerings For 1100 Turkey ( SN 25245) or the 1187 with 23" bbls ( SNs 25357, 25359 ) or 21" Fully rifled Deer ( SN 29831)

Now I and others back in the day used to take a 870 in 12 or 20 and cut the bbl to 21- 24" . On a vent rib 870 the 21" and a tad over 23" length lines up with the part of the rib that attaches to the bbl.

We'd keep eyes and ears open for a bbl a Duck hunter had fired with mud in the end, and purchase a long tube "ruined" for a small fee. :)

Back then the bbls were fixed choke, many were plain. Aftermarket vent ribs were available ( as were Cutts and Polychokes) . Most of us did the Vent rib only, the vent rib allowed for a mid bead. Vent ribs dissapate heat.

Using Professional methods of Gunsmithing ,[ Read get a Gunsmith to do this] shorten barrel, front bead, optional mid bead, optional re- configure stock to Semi-Pistol grip or English ...and install external knurled screw in chokes....What do you have?

OH yes it works great for toting as a Upland Gun....that ain't all folks.

What you have with the Mod ( ~ 30 POC) is a shotgun that uses the powder burn more effiecently , will hang by your side and not drag the ground, FAST to mount gun to face, able to throw GREAT buckshot patterns, GREAT Slug groups, Looks innocent, awesome on any critter, from Upland, Turkey, Deer , or "Varmit Control " - number of legs not important. ;)

Of course with screw in chokes - one can tweak to task , busting quail or taking turkey....venison anyone?

Where this really shines is for Smaller folks in the househjold. Be it Teenagers or Wives . " A bigger person can shoot a smaller Shotgun than a smaller person shooting a bigger gun." So for HD the HD Shotgun( s) did serve as a great Upland gun if need. IN 20 ga - this is an awesome set up!

I have written of this before , one was that of a young lady with all 4 gauges set up the same , all started out as 870s , now English Stocked, shorter tubes with screw in chokes....

Just wanted to toss this out and stir some thoughts.

;)

Good idea for a lot of reasons.

First, none of us gets younger. A little less weight in the shotgun feels like a lot less when one passes 50, and can make a difference at the end of the day.

Next, a general purpose shotgun usable by a variety of family members had practicality up the wazoo.

A shotgun used by our family members for recreation has the advantage of familiarity under stress. The importance of this cannot be overemphasized.

And a short, fast handling shotgun well known to the user is a defensive tool with few peers.

While the Upland Special 1100s and 870s were not a big commercial success, there's very few that ever come up for sale on the used market. Folks with them hang on to them. I would also.
