Fifteen (plus one) rounds of .45 ACP goodness! Finally got the brand-new FN FNX-45 to the range. Whoo-ya! First four shots into one hole (okay, so it was from only seven yards); I was so impressed that I promptly sent the next one a couple inches away. At any rate, the first mag of 15 pretty much tore the center out of the DHS silhouette target.
Some impressions:
I used the larger, arched back-strap as the flat back-strap just made the grip feel too … boxy. While the arched backstrap made the grip seem humongous, the trigger was still easily reached in DA.
The back-strap has the cheese-grater feel of the old HK USP front-strap, but as the pistol does buck a tad, the aggressive checkering is useful.
The dot on the front sight is more oval than round, and not really a dot – it seems to take up pretty much the whole blade of the sight. This actually helped me in the semi-darkness of the local indoor range. At any rate, the sights were exceptionally well regulated and the pistol shot to point of aim.
I shot 230 rounds through the piece on this first outing. 100 rounds of Tula “Brass Maxx” 230 grain FMJ, 100 rounds of Federal 230 grain FMJ and 30 rounds of Remington (green box) 230 grain JHP. I had two hiccups in the first magazine – the safety/de-cocker lever, which is frame-mounted – I somehow managed to knock the safety up to the on position during recoil while trying to find a good grip … Used to being able to “ride” the safety of a 1911, this pistol’s safety is up a bit too high (for me) to do that. Otherwise, the pistol’s performance was flawless.
Speaking of the safety, you can drop a mag and rack the slide to eject the chambered round with the safety on. It’s got the HK/Taurus style of all-the-way down to de-cock. Oh yeah, it can be carried cocked’n’locked.
Nice little rowel hammer. Front cocking serrations, not that I need ‘em, nice long rail. Hey, FN gives us 3 magazines with their product, too! (take that, Kimber!)
Recoil was, to be honest, just a bit more than I expected … I’m so used to shooting steel-framed .45s, that I had to harken back to my fling with the Glock 21 and remember that a much lighter polymer-framed big bore pistol acts somewhat differently.
Trigger reset was a bit long for my taste. Twice I tried to pull the trigger before it’d reset, whoops, no bueno. However, the SA pull was actually surprisingly light, and the DA pull was much better than I expected, very smooth.
My stainless model, in its limited outing, is phenomenally accurate. I am really, really impressed. I’ll put a few hundred more rounds through it, get some night-sights installed, hang a light on it, and it’s gonna be my bedside gun. Gotta find a holster. I hear Blade-Tec can accommodate me. And yeah, it’s my new zombie gun, too. Did I mention 15 rounds?
