Fifteen (plus one) rounds of .45 ACP goodness! Finally got the brand-new FN FNX-45 to the range. Whoo-ya! First four shots into one hole (okay, so it was from only seven yards); I was so impressed that I promptly sent the next one a couple inches away. At any rate, the first mag of 15 pretty much tore the center out of the DHS silhouette target.

Some impressions:

I used the larger, arched back-strap as the flat back-strap just made the grip feel too … boxy. While the arched backstrap made the grip seem humongous, the trigger was still easily reached in DA.
The back-strap has the cheese-grater feel of the old HK USP front-strap, but as the pistol does buck a tad, the aggressive checkering is useful.

The dot on the front sight is more oval than round, and not really a dot – it seems to take up pretty much the whole blade of the sight. This actually helped me in the semi-darkness of the local indoor range. At any rate, the sights were exceptionally well regulated and the pistol shot to point of aim.

I shot 230 rounds through the piece on this first outing. 100 rounds of Tula “Brass Maxx” 230 grain FMJ, 100 rounds of Federal 230 grain FMJ and 30 rounds of Remington (green box) 230 grain JHP. I had two hiccups in the first magazine – the safety/de-cocker lever, which is frame-mounted – I somehow managed to knock the safety up to the on position during recoil while trying to find a good grip … Used to being able to “ride” the safety of a 1911, this pistol’s safety is up a bit too high (for me) to do that. Otherwise, the pistol’s performance was flawless.

Speaking of the safety, you can drop a mag and rack the slide to eject the chambered round with the safety on. It’s got the HK/Taurus style of all-the-way down to de-cock. Oh yeah, it can be carried cocked’n’locked.

Nice little rowel hammer. Front cocking serrations, not that I need ‘em, nice long rail. Hey, FN gives us 3 magazines with their product, too! (take that, Kimber!)

Recoil was, to be honest, just a bit more than I expected … I’m so used to shooting steel-framed .45s, that I had to harken back to my fling with the Glock 21 and remember that a much lighter polymer-framed big bore pistol acts somewhat differently.

Trigger reset was a bit long for my taste. Twice I tried to pull the trigger before it’d reset, whoops, no bueno. However, the SA pull was actually surprisingly light, and the DA pull was much better than I expected, very smooth.

My stainless model, in its limited outing, is phenomenally accurate. I am really, really impressed. I’ll put a few hundred more rounds through it, get some night-sights installed, hang a light on it, and it’s gonna be my bedside gun. Gotta find a holster. I hear Blade-Tec can accommodate me. And yeah, it’s my new zombie gun, too. Did I mention 15 rounds?

Did they change the mags from the FNP-45 like they did with the FNP->FNS->FNX in 9/40?

Love my FNP-45 "Tactical", but finding spare mags has been a problem. Any gun I really like needs enough mags to hold 150-300 rounds so I can spend my time at the range shooting instead of stuffing mags, I spend more than enough non-shooting time at the range picking up brass to reload :)

Apparently, the FNP mags do NOT fit the FNX ... but I just ordered 2 more mags from Midway; they should be here tomorrow (ordered 'em last week).

I'm good with 15 rounds mags of .45. It's a treat, really (although they're harder to load than 1911 mags).

Love my FNP-45. My experience with the grip inserts is exactly the same as yours. Mine came with 14-rd mags, one of which wasn't reliable. I put the 15-rd base plate and spring in that one an now all three are perfect. Mine is decocker only, which I like. I think FN did a good thing making this gun.

I'm glad you like yours. I really wanted to like one I thought like you ooh 15 rounds of 45 goodness but alas the long DA reach was a stretch for my short fat trigger finger but I could get it. Mine had a hitch in the SA trigger when you took it off safety, but it's a SD gun not a target gun so I coulda lived with that. The deal breaker for me was after years of riding the thumb safety on my 1911s I would inadvertently decock the gun from recoil.

I was grumbling about that combined safety decocker layout the first time I saw a USP.
The decock ought to be way up from Safe, not a little way down from Fire.
I'd either manage the crunch-tick or put in a pin to block out the decock and go Condition 1.

Yes indeed, About the only thing Beretta got right with the 9000S :)

Good grief, every minor variation needs a different magazine :(
I've got an FNP-9 and FNP-45, with this I'm done with FN pistols.

That thing is huge

NO they really arent. Its the same size as a Sig Mosquito. The S&W 686/617 is larger. The "bulb" on the bottom of the magazine makes it longer than many pistols, but thats the only thing that makes it large. I have gladly put up with a slightly larger grip to accommodate 15+1 of 45 acp.

My FNX-45 has been excellent. Its extremely accurate, and has been perfectly reliable through 400 rounds.

I've been carrying 15 rounds of 45 goodness in my Para P14 for decades. Since I'm a 1911 guy, I'm going to stick with my double stack 1911...

"That thing is huge"
Eh, size is relative. There's a reason I posted a pic of the piece next to the longer Government Model.

Dammitboy, I have flirted with Para's doublestack 1911s, and have yet to find one that didn't give me problems. However, given how much I like the FNX, I am going to look again at Paras -- especially since it's now a U.S. company.

I'm grappling with the location of the de-cocker/safety lever and we'll see if I can come up with a grip that won't inadvertently de-cock or safe the pistol during volume shooting. I don't want to have to totally change the way I hold a pistol (since it's taken me some 40 years to "perfect" my shooting style to my satisfaction)>

I never understood the "big hand" thing either. I don't have giant hands and I prefer a double stack grip over a single all day long. But, I like a steel 1911, the plastics just don't have an attraction for me. Can't like them.

I have the warthog, my first P14 imported from Canada back in the day, my current stainless P14 limited and a new Para Black Ops on the way. I might have a bias. The warthog was bought used and did need some ramp polishing to load everything consistently. My first P14 was new and needed a good hone/stone cleanup and the ramp polished to qualify for duty carry. The 2year old Limited was flawless out of the gate and I expect great things out of the Black Ops.

I really like the fiber optic sights on the Limited, I just wish I had more grip options.

Good luck with your new gun.

I had a Para LDA 14-45 for a while and hated it, it weighed a ton loaded. I've been packing a FNP45 Tactical on duty for a couple of years and it has been a fantastic gun.

I know a big part of the problem is that I have too much finger on the trigger, but I wear extra large gloves as well and find that the grip size fits me well. However, the tip of my trigger finger hits the extended mag release when I fire the gun on my FNP45. Anyone else having that problem?

Nice!

Been wanting to get my hands on one of those for a while. I'd have to handle/shoot one before buying though, I have smallish hands.

I've got an FNX-45 Tactical, it's a fun gun.

Big enough that I'm not planning on carrying it (unless Illinois goes totally bizarro and permits open carry), but not every gun has to be a constant companion.

Aren't you the same dude who got a p227 last week? You're having a better month than me!

Yeah, my gun budget is already into 2015 ... what can I say? I'm spending money like a government employee ..

My FNX is the best .45 double stack to shoot. I have smaller hands and I would take it over a Glock any time. Just picked up a FNS 9 and I am getting converted from Glock.
