This little pill always surprises me. Was asked to make a long distance video last year finally got around to it. Results actually surprised me.

Now I've shot crows out to 200 yards with this rifle and dispatched them but I was using ballistic tips back then. Gonna repeat test again when I can get my hands in some ballistic tips.

20 gr Gamepoints in the little 17 still have some impressive penetrating power at 200 yds. Earlier this year I decided to dispose of an old Iriver H10 music player at the range. Two shots at 200 yds, both went completely through the aluminum case and all the innards, one even penetrated the devices mini hard drive.

It does penetrate well. What surprised me at this distance was the bullet responded more like a FMJ with no expansion of the bullet. I honestly thought it would fracture more even though advertisement calls it a SP. More tests to come.

my cow pastures are overrun with pigs...I kill a lot of big pigs with the .17hmr 20 grain hunting tips....even with body shots at under 100 yards...just for grins I dug into a 200 boar and the little 20 grain tip made jello out of his heart and lungs....I use it all the time...also good for a shot thru the ear when I get a chance, I use a good 6.5x20x 50 Leupold for that, the scope cost 3 times what the little Savage 93 did...but it is worth it, those damn hogs tear up my pastures.

d2wing: I did a lot of accuracy testing with the 17HMR and various ammos. The best results for me *on average* were Remington labeled rounds, followed by Hornady, both 17gr. I tried the 20gr's too and they did alright, still 1MOA or better at 100.

Winchester is by far the worst.

Thanks, and what rifles do you use. I know you have some nice ones.

Simple, Savage 93R17 BVSS (that's the wood thumbhole stock code I think) with a Limbsaver deresonator about 0.75" from the muzzle tip.

The Anschutz 17's are super nice, but the Savage is a real bargain. I don't like the MKII in 22lr though; mine wouldn't shoot.

Interesting, my CZ has always shot it's best with Winchester 20gr, second place is CCI Gamepoint. For me, all the 20gr Gamepoint/xtp rounds shoot better than the 17gr ballistic tips, and much better than the FMJ's.

Great video and great shooting! I love my 17 out here in the deserts of CA. It shoots flat and hammers hard.

Thanks,

Matt
