Ok here is the gun. 1858 Pietta .44
Ordered last week. Kirst Conversion
Recieved the Conversion on Monday. Quick delivery from Buffalo Arms.

Today i went to insert the cylinder. On the first try it did not even fit in the frame. Too long. I took off the rear k adapter and tried just the cylinder still too long. Took out the paper work went to the trouble guide. Says you may have to cut down the front muzzle area. do it in increments of .005 at a time. So i take out to the garage and do a light file down on the cylinder face. Then used a hone stone. Then tried it for fit. I ended up doing this about 4 times until i got a nice .005 air gap between the cylinder and frame. I then tried to re assemble the cylinder with the K adapter. This time the arbor shaft would not seat in all the way. So i take out my feeler guages. on the top rear of the cylinder the distance from the top of the k adapter and cylinder were smaller than the most forward part. So took out the k adapter then had to shave off .004 from the bottom of the k adapter. then re inserted the cylinder. Now the cylinder fits perfectly. OR SO WE THINK. Next i started to mess with the timing just a hair on honing the Bolt and the hand. Then i took a .450 rod and slowly went down the Barrel why the gun was in battery. I could feel it barely grabbing at the top of the cylinder. Which meant the cylinder was still too high in the back. So then i removed the K adapter shaved another .003 off the bottom. then tried it again. After that i honed it down just a hair more. Then end result was every cylinder from the back to the front goes straight into the barrel. alignment correct. Checked and rechecked with feeler guages all around. Now the timing is on and the cylinder is ready to go. This weekend i will mask it off and do the porting job then reblue the gun. I took my birchwood casey cold blue pen and went over the front of the cylinder and the bottom of the k adapter. and it looks like it was never machined down. Will follow up with a few pics later on.

Very cool, one day maybe I'll get me one of those but then I may stick with my C&B cylinders in mine.

Good luck, have you loaded up any .45 Colts yet for it or just starting out with some store bought?

Oh ya i have been shooting 45 colt for some time. i have an R&D cylinder for my Walker. Its pretty fun. That one i went R&D as i did not want to change anything on the Walker. Its a straight drop in. As for the 1858 i pretty much bought it for this reason. To get the loading gate and everything. Right now it works very good with both cylinders. So i can pretty much go out shoot cap and ball on all my guns. then change cylinders and start shooting 45 colt. I am going to be pretty busy for the next couple of weeks with work. So it will probably be about 3 weeks before i get to take it out so for now on the porting im going to really take my time.
