my only colt is a 1860 cabelas pietta, now i am looking at 1861's to get a 36. does the uberti version still have arbor length problems and are the recent blued frames forged like the latest uberti remington nma? then on the pietta side, i know the loading gate is small but will the cabelas pietta colt parts kit fit the 1861. thanks

Dr.,
If it says "Uberti" on it, the arbor is too short.
The frames of the open tops of both companies are given a case hardening treatment and aren't blue.
Not sure what you mean by loading gate.

Having both a Pietta 1861 and the Uberti 1861 the biggest "ding" against Pietta is they use the 8" barrel, IMHO the same as their 1860 uses just bored to .36 caliber size. Original Colt '61s had a 7½" inch barrel, and the Uberti also has that length barrel.
The Pietta version is, however, a very nice revolver.

45d, i should have stated loading window, which on the pietta is to small for conicals, but i can fix that with hand tools. the uberti arbor fix is a bit more involved and can be avoided by going with the pietta. the barrel length is a non issue for me. thanks for the input all.

edit; another + pietta feature is the low cost cabelas parts kit.

I have a new 1860 Uberti and the arbor is correct. May be a fluke but it's right.

OK, Steve, show us disbelievers. Pull the wedge, reinstall the barrel at a 45+ degree rotation angle onto the arbor showing the relation between the frame and the barrel lug supposedly clearing the frame and take a pic.

That will make believers of us all that Uberti has changed their manufacturing practices.

If so, that will make among knowledgeable folks Uberti sales to soar and Pietta sales to diminish, only because Uberti seems to have a rep for a better finished pistol.

Uberti, are you listening?

Still a Pietta guy,

Jim

If you are eager to expand your collection, get a Pietta 1861. You can buy a 51 barrel assembly and trade the two out. With the CNC manufacturing process they are interchangeable. I bought a 61 barrel that I'm going to cut down to make a snub 1851/61, keeping the 51 barrel so I can use the loading lever.

I never knew Ubertis had this issue, is this a new thing? I was thinking about getting a Uberti Walker or 1851, is the issue only on the 1861?

All Uberti open top revolvers are famous for this

Steve, if yours is right, it would be the first ever. I'll bet if you drop a small washer in the arbor hole and install the barrel assy, it will install (which means your arbor isn't bottoming out ).
Or, if you tap the wedge in as far as you can, it will lock up the cylinder (the wedge isn't a cylinder clearance setter !!)
Either way, it's too short (they all are) and it's an easy fix.

Expat, that isn't a reliable test to check for a short arbor (see above ).

Jmar, chewed up wedges, stretched arbors, distorted wedge slots , not having the same revolver each time you reassemble it . . . . . or even shot to shot.

The arbor should bottom out in the barrel assy so the revolver will shoot as a sold frame revolver, be a consistent shooter and not destroy itself. This is what allows the brassers to " shoot loose"!!

Sorry I havent learned how to upload pics from my phone yet but hope i will..being a good listener and Studying the book of Goon the first thing i did when i got it was see what size shim I was going to need and was amazed that it was right..Im not trying to discredit anyone at all especially you Mike

Ha!!
Like I said, there's always a possibility of "the " one! Congratulations!!
So I'm guessing you can't lock up the cylinder by tapping the wedge in till it quits moving? Hmmm . . . . what's the barrel/cylinder clearance?

Likewise, don't think that I know everything there is to know about setting these open tops up . . . . . . . HAAAA!!!! Ok, I do (thanks to Pettifogger and Jim Martin) not me!! I just packaged what I consider to be the best setup for open tops. I have always thought close tolerance, positive stops for action parts and exact timing will give the longest/best performance.

Mr. Pettifogger lays out the problem and the fix, Mr. Martin gives the proper setup/procedure for Colt/Colt type actions, Magnum Research has the type of tollerances I was looking for. I decided on my particular combination of all of these processes and throw in a little fast draw setup/protection (for the action) and the result is a light/easy handling action with perfect timing, built like a tank open top revolver that can run like a cartridge gun!!
That's what I like.

dd, if the 1851 barrel fits the 1861 frame, is the converse true, the 1861 barrel on the 1851 frame? so far the best price i can find is $295 @ dixie. if i get an 1851 navy from cabelas on sale, taylors has the 1861 barrel listed for $135.

dd, i found a pietta 61 at friendly price. now i am looking for a brass 51 with the 5" barrel but a car repair bill has drained the pool. with the brass you get the barrel and spare parts. maybe the pool will refill by cabelas dec sale?

Ha. my car's A/C just went out on the hottest muggiest day of the year....

Yeah, I'd wait for a Cabela's sale; if you can get one of those $20 off coupons and free shipping when the guns are marked at $149... 129 is well worth it for a brasser, IMHO. Just load 15 grains BP and fill the rest up with cornmeal or rice or whatever has been in the pantry too long. A while back i loaded up a cylinder with some (at least) six year old Oregano that had turned from green to brown and lost it's smell...next up some ancient cayenne...

Here is another lesser known secret....

You can save another 15 to 20% on top of the coupon codes, and sale prices by picking up Cabela's gift cards from this seller who routinely offers $50 & $100 gift cards at 15% to 20% off, (usually 15%)

Thy have $50 cards for sale now, limit 3...

I have no association with this seller, other than having purchased several gift cards from them in the past

From Desidog: A while back i loaded up a cylinder with some (at least) six year old Oregano that had turned from green to brown and lost it's smell...next up some ancient cayenne...

Oh man....please be sure to warn everyone on and near the line that you're going to shoot the pepper loads! That could be VERY similar to the OC shells and might get someone with respiratory problems into a bad state.

At a car dealership years ago one of the stupid salesmen saw a shiny container hanging on a set of keys on the 'in the lot' board and started messing around with it. He said he thought it was a cigar lighter..but it was teargas...or worse. He fired a little shot right into his face and down he went. I caught a whiff clear across the shop and skiddaddled out of there....then three others walked through the cloud and were all laying on the ground coughing and convulsing. That stuff is nothing to play around with, but I like the idea of trying the cayenne!:)
