I own 2 Uberti 1885 High Wall repros and a Browning Low Wall and my question regards what happens to the hammer when the action is closed. The hammer on the Uberties goes to half cock while the hammer on the Browning goes to full cock and my question is: what position (full or half cock) did the original Winchester 1885's leave the hammer. I have be told both ways by the local "experts".

Thank you for any input.

Went and checked. Alzheimers you know. After you've operated the lever you are most definately left with a cocked gun(FULLY)

As I recall - Madis loaned out and not returned - most Winchester single shots go to full cock (including mine) but the Winder musket for use by military school cadets went to half cock. Maybe some other later guns.

Uberti is playing it safe.

Thank you gentlemen for the replies. "Knowledgeable" people have given me both sides and it is nice to know the facts. I really prefer the Uberti half cock approach as it is a bit safer IMHO.
