I am talking about the one with the bayonet lug and fixed sights. Someone put on up on gunbroker briefly and I thought it was fake as the serial number was 49xxx which would put it out of the production years which were 1937 or so and production was very short (about 2 years) from what I have been able to find. The gun looked right except for the date of manufacture and the guy had been told that the gun was legit in every way by a Winchester expert in Cody. I recall seeing the barrel attachment for the bayonet for sale on ebay of all places some years back so I don't think it would be that hard to modify the barrel to take the lug.

This is the first one I have seen for sale and I would appreciate input as to the possibility of this gun being original just to put this matter at rest.

Does he have a Winchester letter saying what the "expert" told him? If not, I would strongly suggest someone get one before any deals are made. Otherwise, it's just "so-and-so said that so-and-so said".

However, special models were often made up to order. The 1907 was made for some 50 years, and with Winchester, custom features could be ordered almost any time.

The owner claimed to have a letter from on of the founders of Cody Firearms Museum as Winchester lost a lot of their records in a fire sometime ago. He should have posted it on gunbroker, but since he did not I suspect the gun is a fake. I will go on to state that if someone requested a gun and was willing to pay I have no doubt that Winchester would have made it anyway he wanted it. He got a lot of nasty emails from bidders who wanted the gun as he pulled it off the auction. We may never know the full story.
