.I think rubber grips on a 1911 are fine, just as long as they aren't wraparounds that cover the front strap. To me, nothing ruins the sleek feel of a 1911 more than wraparound grips, especially finger grove wrap arounds.
Rubber grips on a 1911 are about as soul-less as you could possibly get. I can tolerate rubber grips on a revolver as they do a great job of absorbing recoil, but on a 1911 they are about as cheap and cheesy looking as you can get in my opinion.
I appreciate that. While I certainly am partial to wood (obviously), I own a lot of G10 grips as well. I've even seen some very nice stag grips that I would consider at some point if I had another 1911 that needed grips. But rubber is simply the one material that I just CANNOT abide on a 1911. I can't tell you how many sets of Pachmyer grips I've trashed over the years that came on used guns I've bought. You can go on ebay and get some really nice wood grips for about the same price as a set of Pachmyer grips and it totally changes the look of the gun. I've had guys not even recognize their own old guns after they've sold them to me and I've done my part cleaning, detailing, and changing the grips.^^^
Says the guy that makes some of the more beautiful custom wood grips out there
I recently picked up a set of VCD Grips. http://www.vcdgrips.com
I haven't done any work with them yet, but they are grippy, and just handling the gun with them, fairly comfortable. One advantage over an equally grippy G10 panel, they won't need O-rings to keep the grip screws tight.
