Any suggestions who could do a mount on the slide of a Baer Wadcutter for a small red dot scope.

My Baer had a new frame and mating of my existing slide but I asked them not to remount the Baer aluminum frame mount rail. Problem is I screwed up and didn't ask them about making a small sight mount on the slide, - now I have a slide with no mounting points!

Or could I just have a local smith drill holes in the slide where appropriate? Looking to mount a Burris fast Fire 3, I don't really want a picatinny or weaver mount rail (though I do have a rail attachment made by Burris). I would prefer a more direct mount to the slide that's loctited in.

Suggestions, Ideas? Thanks

I have the Burris mounts for Berettas and generic 1911's and the picatinny/weaver mount- don't believe they make one to attach/drill into slide. They have instructions for a tap and drill, but not a relatively flat surface like the Marlin shown.

I need something soldered to the slide or the slide drilled into directly. As I think of it I would prefer soldering on something with a dovetail so I could mount iron sights if I chose. I messed up and should have had Baer do it while there. I actually forgot.

I realize he is located in the Western part of PA, but everybody around here recommends his work on 1911's.

Sorry his web site is new and pretty incomplete. The pictures do show some of his 1911 mounts.

Do you have a rear sight dovetail at all???

If you do, the Burris mount should work just fine.

There is nothing on the slide- imagine your slide naked - something will have to be soldered on or drilled and tapped through the slide. Same for front- if sight were needed it would have to be soldered on

Burris sells mounts that utilize the rear dovetail and there are a couple different ones available for the 1911 - the 410321 for the factory standard dovetail and the 410322 for the Novak adjustable rear dovetail. See rcmodel's post above for the instructions. You could even do a version of the 410330 Picatanny rail mount with a short section of rail, but I imagine that would put the sight to high to allow use of the iron sights with the sight still installed (no see through), unless you used suppressor sights to raise the sight line.

The best installations have a flat or pocket machined for direct mounting of the sight. That's a one shot deal, so best to find someone who has done enough of them to have a solid track record. With irons on it, too, you will have less real estate to work with and you need to decide up front whether you want the red dot in front of the rear iron or behind it. I think having the iron at the back with the dot in between the front and rear irons makes more sense, but others prefer the red dot on the back.

There is no dovetail - It is just the semi rounded slide -nothing else. Oh I so wish there was a dovetail!!!

I will find a gunsmith to weld/solder a sight base for me. I am not enthused about a one shot deal with my luck ... long stories about how bad it is :) Thats why I am aking about anyone y'all know.

I would have a dovetail milled. I have a couple of friends with dovetail mounted Fast Fires on 1911's. They are clean looking set ups that work extremely well.

+1

My experience with screws in 1911 slides back in the day was, sooner or later, they are going to come off.

Either by shearing the screws, or wearing the hole threads out.

A popular mod back in the 60's & 70's was mounting an adjustable S&W revolver sight on them.
Without a couple of recoil studs drilled through the S&W spring sight base the screw just couldn't cope with the G-Force the slide subjected them to.

A screw-on red dot mount would be even worse because of the added weight.

IMO: A dovetail in the slide is the only way to do it!

I ended up using Halston, reaonable and solid. He's experienced in Bullseye mount work which is important to me.

Laphroaig, thanks for the recommend. I prefer local or PA businesses first, always.

John is a good guy and will do a nice job. He knows his stuff.

He put a mount on my 1911 a while ago with an Ultradot. I really like it.
