Am I mistaken, or should the slide stay open after the last round is fired out of the magazine. I swear it used to but the last couple times out with her it just goes into battery. Is there something I can do to fix this?

The slide should stay open after the last round is fired.

The magazine follower is what pushes the slide stop into place, so the first thing I'd check are your mag springs. Take the slide off and stick an empty mag in. The slide stop should go into the "up" position. If it doesn't, check the mag spring and follower. The follower could be bent or mishapen.

You can also check to see if there are any markings on the flat end of the slidestop, where the detent pin hits it. I had one that had such a groove in it - to keep the slide stop from engaging prematurely - that it almost wouldn't engage at all.

Take the slide off, put the slide stop back in, and insert an empty mag.

See the little bent tab on the magazine follower pushing the slide stop up?

O.K., if it is missing the slide stop, you need to take the mag apart and bend the tab over towards the slide stop slightly with needle-nose pliers until it works like it should.

Check your grip

The same thing happened to me -- with great frequency -- when I got professional instruction that advocated the isoceles stance in lieu of the Weaver for close -range speed. My thumbs tended to both point forward (I'm right handed) and the left thumb would frequently trip the slide stop. Never happens with a Weaver hold.
