I just bought a new Springfield !911A. It's my first .45 ACP in more than 20 years. I notice that as I draw the hammer back, there is a stop just as the hammer pulls off the firing pin; the hammer then draws back into the half-cock position.
What is the purpose of this first detente? Is it a safety feature? Can I safely carry a cartridge in the chamber with the hammer resting in this position (just off the firing pin)?
Thanks for any information you can provide
