I want to change my 2 1/2 in S&W 19 to a 3" heavy contour. Do I have to change any other parts like the extractor rod?

To the best of my knowledge, the model 19 never came in 3", only the 10 and 13 came in 3". Someone else will probably chime in, but i do not think that it is possible, and if it were to be done, it would be a custom job. Yes, you would need another extractor rod if it is possible, as the 3" models have a full length extractor rod, which is one of the draws of 3" k and l frames.

Yes the 19 was made in limited numbers as a 3" and they command a premium price. S&W does not have any more model 19 barrels and will not replace them. You might find a 4" barrel and have it cut down, it will be pricey.

I've got the 3 in. barrel. gun is currently 2.5. My gunsmith will do the job a lot cheaper if I come in with all the parts. Before y'all say why don't you just ask him, he is in Montana for the next 3 weeks and I woulld like to have everything ready for him when he gets back. So if you know what other parts I may need please chime in. Thanks guys.

One of my buddies had a bunch of barrels that he bought at an auction years ago and we were looking at them just to see what he had b/c he had forgotten about them. I saw it and told him I would like to buy it. He doesn't have a 19 so he said "hell you can just have the thing." Good friend. I'm guessing I need a longer ejector rod and a longer ejector housing,if that is the correct terminology. Can anyone think of anything else I might need.

I have a M66 in 3". Its one of my favorite guns.

Yes, you'll also need a new extractor rod. The one you have now will be too short to engage its forward locking point.

When you say that you will need a "longer ejector housing" I guess that you mean the shroud that covers the ejector rod. That is a part of the new barrel.

Ejector rod

You will definitely need a longer ejector rod. Look at this picture below of my two model 66s with a 2.5 and a 3.0 inch barrel. The model 66 is almost identical to the model 19 except for the type of steel used.

One of the Advantages...

...of the three-inch barrel is precisely that it does use the longer ejector rod. The shorter ejector rod of the revolver with the 2 1/2" barrel will not produce a full extraction of the fired cases if you fail to use a technique that imparts sufficient momentum to the empty cases for them to fully clear the chambers.

I am fortunate to own a couple of three-inch M-66's and only recently learned that there had been limited production of three-inch M-19's after a friend told me he had passed on one at a recent gun show due to the higher price for its collector value.

You need the top three pieces, the center pin #7003, the center pin spring #5458 and the extractor rod #5455.
