20 or 28?

pellets

Just a late response to a question:
Does an 1/8th ounce of payload make much of a diference?
Well....an 1/8th ounce of #8 shot is 50 pellets....what do you think?

Good question.

I shoot 1 oz loads for skeet. Another 50 pellets would be nice sometimes. Being a better shot would be better though.... A miss is still a miss.

Naah. I shoot 1 oz. if I have the choice. It may make a difference, but I've never noticed it.

Hey judge,

Neither actually. Not too long ago, about the same time this thread started, I started getting hooked on skeet. So, a certain Citori CX got in the way.

I was dead set on a 20 gage and had narrowed it down to the Weatherby SA-08 or the Viper G2. Non were in stock locally in any event. If I'm not mistaken both guns are offered in 20 & 28 gage. It'd be nice to have. One of each.

You can't go wrong with a Citori. That is what I shoot, although I would like one in 28. Some day.

I go 20 over anything else but I'm not a duck/goose hunter either.

Prefer the 20 over the 12 and for sure over the 28. I think the 20 is the sweet spot in shotguns, or at least for me it it.

My elderly Father is a huge 16ga fan but it runs into the same issues as 28 in my mind as to ammo options and availability. Both are good options but if you go with the 28 you will have to order your ammo in many places, not a deal breaker but a consideration.

20 gauge for sure, just for economics and flexibility. Full disclosure, I only use a 20 for rabbits and squirrels- I use 12 for everything with feathers.

I'd go 20 ga too, if for no other reason, the availability and variety of factory ammo.

Just bought my wife the SA-08 in 20ga for shooting clays. She loves it. Nice gun for the price.

Ummm...........with the Weatherby you will probably have to be satisfied with the included furniture, right? I have not seen any 3rd party manufacturer offer replacement stocks and forends for Weatherbys.

When I was shooting competitive skeet, my 20 gauge average with 7/8 oz. loads was better than my 12 gauge average with 1 oz. loads. Both were better than my 12 gauge average with 1-1/8 oz. loads.

There's more to hitting targets than extra pellets in the shell. I could never get my Citori to swing shooting 12 gauge as it swings with the 20 gauge tubes in it.

Shot a round of skeet with a 410 using only 1/2 oz reloads last week. Hits are clean... Full on smoke. Misses are clean... Straight up misses with no doubt whatsoever.

Gage doesn't seem to matter at skeet distance as much as the shooter. Still, I'd rather have a 20 I think. The OPs focus is on an SA dove gun. The 20 just seems like a reasonable choice. As much as I think I want a 28 gage i know it's the wrong choice for me.
