20 rd mag only hold 10

Hey Guys,

Just picked up a PreBan (communist NY) 20 rd mag from LGS. When I tried to load with 20 rds it would jam at 10.

I should post pics, but in the meantime, noticed when compared to my other 20 rd mag that there is a depressed groove on each side of the mag at 10 rd level that appears to be stopping the stack from accepting the rounds.

Anybody here familiar with this type mag? Everything else seems identical to the one that takes 20. I took it apart and cleaned it to see if that was the problem and pushed the follower down when empty, so it seems it these grooves that are causing the issue.

You've already figured it out.

These give the look and gripability of 20s while maintaining the legality for 10 round states.

Another way some like Colt went was to assemble the standard body mags with a block inside and the floorplate riveted in place. These could be converted in legal states but the ones with the displaced body steel like yours were more problematic.

Sounds like someone sold you a post-ban 20 round mag limited to 10 rounds to make it legal. I'm just outside of Buffalo and I have a 30 round pmag permanently modified/limited to 10 rounds (came with my rifle that way.)

I'd bring it back.

If you didn't pay terribly much, I'd hang on to it. 10rd mags will be in short supply for a while.

Thanks for the replies - glad to hear I was on the right track. Never heard of this type and I did get a decent deal on it from one of my favorite shops - I'm sure the owner didn't try to deceive me as he is not a big AR guy and he took it in on trade.
Will definitely hang on to it especially with the current hysteria.
Now if I can only get the parts for my build!
