Has anyone tried shooting 200 yards with the 44 special in a revolver? Old Elmer has got me interested in trying it. So it's on my bucket list. Only I'm going to try it with my red dot. At 73 I have a tough time with the regular sights. Be using 240 gr cast bullets. Should be interesting.

I've taken the .44 Special out to 600 yards, both with the Keith load and the Skeeter load. Both of them are exercises in artillery, and you can't expect first round hits on much of anything. Once you get POA worked out, I expect about 10 MOA from a solid shooting position. Better than that is certainly possible, but not every gun and load will do it. (I suspect that 4 MOA is within reach of good but not extraordinary guns, but with iron sights, I don't know how to prove it.)

Like old Elmer, I find that long range is kind of the ultimate test of revolver accuracy.

I shot at 75y today. First shot I missed my 4” plate, second hit it. Then missed a while till I got bored. For me the limiting factor is my hands, inconsistency. Those first few shots are the best normally.

I printed three shots on paper at that distance, about 4”, the other three were not reasonable. But it’s part of the game.

I could hit metal bowling pins quickly and regularly with my SBH and Skeeter’s load two handed standing 50 yards. Put it on paper, off bench was able to keep 4” groups 100 yards. Been a few years. I don’t see why beyond the rainbow trajectory it’s shouldn’t be doable with the right revolver. Longer sight radius will help.

I have shot the steel gongs at 200 with my CVA hunter rifle. I have a Traditions scope with a BDC reticle on it. Once i found what marking to use i was good to go.

I have shot to 200 several times, the guy I shoot with some talked me into it and it was a lot of fun. It really helps to have a spotter though and for me I need a rest to hit about as much as he hits freehand.

Out in the desert you can shoot as far as you can see. We don't range things, but just start taking shots and watching the misses. You can walk in your shots and once you find the sweet spot can hit with regularity. We normally shoot at deer sized boulders. It is a ton of fun and a great way to pass the afternoon.

100 yards over a rest was not a challenge. Never tried any farther. Took a cow moose at 90, a couple Elk (1 cow, 1 6X) at 80-90. Deer at 25 to 100. All with Sierra 300 g SP. In A 10.5” Blackhawk topped with a leupold 2x. Hunting at it’s finest.

Same here. I used to shoot at empty barrels someone dumped on BLM land in a draw. Range was about 400 yards and I had an elevated spot to shoot from. I would sit down and prop my elbows on my knees and start shooting. Hits were pretty easy. Then the BLM came in, cleaned up and fenced the area, and my fun pistol range was no more.

best to do it with the "keith" load (if your gun will handle it).

i have done long range with my blackhawk, in 45 colt, but loaded up with 265 grain swc @ 1200 fps.

luck,

Well, it wasn't 400 yards (more like 100), but it was a pistol; Beretta 950 in .22 short. A buddy and I sat on an abandoned railroad bridge, with a six pack and bag of latex balloons.
We would toss the inflated balloons off the bridge, and sink them as they drifted off downstream. The river made a sharp turn to the left about 100yd away, with a sheer bank behind it; great backstop.
We could correct for shell splash (kinda of a miniature Battle of Jutland), and never had a single balloon escape downstream. The six pack did steady the aim...
Yeah, that was fun. Spot is a bike trail now.

I used to shoot IHMSA handgun silhouette. I shot a 357 Mag revolver for a while and it shot flat enough and had enough sight adjustment for the 200 meter rams.

Getting ready for one match, I had an issue with my 357 Mag revolver and had to press a 45 Colt revolver into service.

Things were fine out to the 150 meter turkeys but I had to hold about 20 feet above the 200 meter rams to hit them. If I hit the ram with the 255 grain SWC bullet, it fell. But, the rainbow tradjectory made life interesting.

Similar results would be obtained with 44 Special loads and revolvers.

I shot my .44 Magnum revolver at 'distance' (usually could not be assured of the range) when I was younger. Got 'fair' at it. (Go ahead, define that.) Could reasonable hit an IPSC type target at more than 100 yards.
My eyes have always been 'weak' in that I could not keep a decent focus at any range for a long period of time. Now it's worse. And I realized I don't really have any purpose in long range pistol shooting. Not personally at any rate.

But it is fun and a challenging goal. For me, it is less fun and more challenging than in prior days.
