Sometimes things seem to go just as planned. With just two days of season to go, my son shot this very-late-season buck late last night. Antlers have been shedded long ago but it's pretty big although young, probably three years old and 200lbs+.

Even though he has shot a lot of game over the years, this was his VERY FIRST WHITETAIL and he's over the moon now. We had sauna and a few beers afterwards, along with shots of Ratzeputz (google it, we were fresh out of Jägertee & Jägermeister, that's more or less the same thing but on serious steroids) to celebrate this. :D

Next season... another one like this but with antlers still intact. Something to look forward to.

Congrats on your sons success. Nice looking deer. What calibre is that at?

Thanks! It's .308, a 16" Stag 10S. Maybe a bit overkill for whitetail but as a combined deer/moose gun it's pretty good. I was nearby and saw it go down. A 30yd shot through the neck, the only vital body part visible through thick spruce bush; DRT. Now he needs a freezer of his own, no more "borrowing" my venison whenever he drops by. :)

Ok.
The 14 point nontypical buck I harvested in early archery went to the taxidermist.
A fellow gun club member told me to save the lower jawbone so that he could age the animal based on teeth and possibly teeth wear.
There are 3 ways to do this but I'm a bit confused on where the teeth actually separate.

Does anyone do this or know how?
I'll google again to try.

Heres the jawbone link.
I'll copy the pic later on my desktop.
