It's time to wrap up the 2021 season and prepare for 2022.
What new gear or guns did you use in 2021 that's worth bragging on? (Or trashing? )

My son repayed me for several hours of semi driving with a new pair of Vortex 10x42s. 20211223_160107.jpg
Wow! I never had a clearer set of binos!.
I managed to do a little missing during firearms season so I decided to try a vortex crossfire 3x9 x50 on my slug gun. It appears to be a nice scope.

My Mechanix gloves are still my favorite hunting gloves. If it gets really cold, I slip a pair of farmer gloves (yellow, fuzzy, washable, buy them by the dozen every fall) over the top.

The hornandy 100 gr 243 bullets performed well over 39.8 gr h 4350 and win lrp out of my m11 savage, one shot drt. The original replacement gloves rated for cold didn't keep my hands warm at all and couldn't operate the tang safety on m11, cost an opertunity on a large buck. Would like to sat that I was successful with my AR but saw nothing to shoot at with it.

I finally killed something with my Nosler M48 with Leupold VX6HD 2-12x Firedot BDC.

Bought the rifle to replace my Steyr Professional with Swarovski 2.2-9X that was shot out. I developed a couple loads for the M48; 130 BTs at 3170 and 130 ABs at 3160. Since buying it I hadn't had a chance to hunt anywhere with potential distance was involved, so I stuck with a pair of M7s in .260Rem and .350RM. Finally this Sept I killed an antelope in WY and a 7pt off my neighbors earlier this month across a pasture. Overall very, very happy with the combination. 24" barrel and 8.3lbs all up. Constant sub-MOA barrel that cleans up very easily, combined with a pretty good trigger.

Big plus goes to my Bog Pod "Switcheroo" tripod. In prep for the WY hunt I spent a a lot of time practicing with it. I've now taken 7 animals off that tripod at distances from 245, to slightly over 350 yds. Light enough to carry all day strapped to my backpack, but stable enough to shoot off.

The jury is still out on my blaze orange tactical molle hunting vest from Canada. I envisioned this thing as being "just the thing" for still hunting when I didn't want to carry a backpack. Problem is, our temps vary so wildly during the day, I need the capacity of a backpack just to carry the multiple layers I end up shedding. I did end up using it a couple times during drives this year and for that it worked "OK". The hydration bladder pouch was handy and it did have enough space for the normal gear:

I'll probably give it another season.

Edited to add, almost forgot my Alaska guide Creations Bino Pack!

https://alaskaguidecreations.com/products/kodiak-c-u-b-with-m-a-x-pocket

Works awesome! The phone pocket/webbing on top works extremely well. The pack has enough room for essentials. Very comfortable for long days.

Binos (of course)
Lens cleaners
laser range finder
Kestrel (in bottom pocket)
Wind indicator
Couple of rounds spare ammo
lighter
Small pocket knife

Havent had anything horrible, havent had anything fantastic this year.

Equipment wise im quite happy with the new Athlon Midas 1mile range finder, but its not really a huge "improvement" over what i had. Just a little quicker and gives better reading at distance when were plinking.

The Christensen Mesa 7-08 has proved effective and comfortable to both shoot and carry. The Leupold vx3hd is nice tho im not a fan of the Zlock turret.

Just 110 grain Barnes Tac-x in 300 BLK Mrs. Fl-NC used to bag her first deer. He ran about 50-60 yards and crashed, but the blood trail was piss-poor. I'm going to re-zero that gun for subs again; and in the future she will be hunting with my 243.

My proudest moment this year. A friend didn’t have 7mm Rem Mag rounds for hunting season this year, and couldn’t get any. And I have a big stash of components. So I loaded and gave him 2 boxes of 175 ELD-X, 2 boxes of 175 Gamekings, one box of 150 gr Hotcores. My recipe has them all with pretty similar trajectory out to about 600 yards. He and his wife shot with 7mm a cow moose, two pronghorn, two mule deer, no elk. All they eat is wild game, so they and two kids are set until next year.

I sort of went overboard this year spending, however. Kimber combat 357 revolver. S&W 586 357 revolver. TC Venture II 223. Savage Axis II in 243 rebarrelled to 358 Win. Athlon IR scope. Vortex scope. Predator caller with motion. Athlon 10x binoculars. S&W Victory, carbon fiber barrel, red dot sight, 6 mags, Tandemkross trigger, grips and hammer.

My Mechanix gloves are still my favorite hunting gloves. If it gets really cold, I slip a pair of farmer gloves (yellow, fuzzy, washable, buy them by the dozen every fall) over the top.

I do something similar with the gloves except I have a pair of Arctic mittens that I stick my hands in.

Bought a Sitka Incinerator hand muff. Game changer for me. Always suffered cold hands no matter what gloves I've used. Switched to thumb release this year (Stan Perfex) and did not like shooting with any glove on my draw hand. Ended up ditching the gloves during gun season also as the hand muff is so warm.
Picked up a SIG range finder with red display after being unable to range a deer with my old one with black display due to low light.

Man, am I glad my girlfriend doesn't have a profile on here. :) I spent a lot of money this year upgrading cheap stuff.

Leupold RX 1400 TBR/W: This replaced a 10yo Simmons that wouldn't range anything over 200yards. I like the red readout, the quick display compared to the Simmons and I was able to pickup a large metal sign over 1k yards multiple times. I will give it a 9 out of 10 because the button is a little too far forward for me.

Hawk Crawler Game Cart: If you hunt alone this is probably the best deer cart I ever used. I loaded this thing up with firewood and dragged it around the yard and even crawled over piles of firewood and never dumped the load. My girlfriends 70yo mom even put lawn bags and another stuff in it and dragged it around the yard with ease. I will give this 8 out of 10 because its huge, even folded. I also left it outside in the rain and all the welds and cut ends began to rust.

Sharpell Jet Sled Small: I love hunting late season when there is snow on the ground. I also don't want blood in the bed of my truck so I picked this up. First thoughts was whoever priced these things was on crack! Why does a plastic sled cost so much. After shooting a medium size doe in a flooded area, covered in briars waist high I left the cart in the truck and grabbed the sled and it worked well going over the water and the briars which the cart would have hung up on. I give it a 8 out of 10 as well. Downside was price and dragging across a muddy winter wheat field was a bear. I think the cart would have done better

Rick Young Bino Harness w/rangefinder loop: Lightweight and I like how it can be carried in multiple positions and hold the binos tight to your chest. I opted to get the rangefinder cord that hangs off the side of the harness. I give this a 7 out of 10. One star taken off due to price. Its just bungee cord and cost close to $45. Another star taken off is the rangefinder kind of just dangles there. I am afraid if the plastic push clip coming undone and losing the rangefinder. Another star taken off for how hard it is to get on. My old strap style one was easy to get on once untangled but the RY harness seems to get all hung up on your clothes when putting it on.

Huntworth Heated Hand Muff:
For $25-30 at wally world it cant be beat. It takes a cell phone battery charger pack and heats about 3hrs on a normal charger pack. I was able to sit in 30 degree temps with no gloves all day. I give this 9 out of 10. Only downside is I have large hands and there isn't a ton of room compared to the hunter safety system heated hand warmer.

Black Eagle Executioner Crossbow Arrows: Supposedly one of the best on the market. Had one arrow with a loose nock and possible crack in the nock area that cost be an arrow and slick trick broadhead. I have used these in the past and give them a 9 out of 10 for the one arrow that was faulty. I like that they are .001 straightness and come with good vanes.

Outdoor Edge Swingblade: I've used a buddies to field dress deer and bought my own from Menards for $30 on sale. I field dressed two deer with it this season and it works very well and I highly recommend it. I don't recommend leaving it lay on the wiper area of your truck, not in the sheath and drive away when its dark only to realize you left it on the wipers. Its a good thing Menards ran another sale and I got the last one. I do feel bad for whoever's tire it shredded. I give this 10 out of 10.

Hooyman folding saw: Old purchase but first time used this year. I used it to cut about a 4'' diameter cherry tree limb and it works great. I then tried using the bone saw to cut the sternum and pelvis on a deer and it was horrible. Way too much wobble in the blade to give a consistent cut on hard bone. I give it a 8 out of 10. Price was a little high and don't see any difference than a good fiskers saw or even a Home depot saw and the flex in the blade. I done think the bone saw blade should be 8-10''.

Gerber Bone Saw: I purchased this after dealing with the Hooyman. I used to buy the $10 HME bone saws and they worked well for 1-2 deer. The Gerber being over $30 I felt like it was exactly like the HME saw. It works well for doing the pelvis and sternum. I give it 9 out of 10 because I think its overpriced.

Ice Breakers Boot Blankets: I will let you know how these work. I ordered the 2xl which is supposed to be for size 13-14 boots. I tried them on with my size 13 Timberland work boots and they were snug. I doubt my hunting boots will even fit in them but will see this weekend.

Cabelas Silent Stalker Elite Parka and Bibs:
Super warm, quiet, waterproof and affordable. The parka is a little heavy but its a 3-1 parka and very warm with lots of pockets. I give this system 10 out of 10.

Winchester 300gr HP 45-70 Factory ammo. I had a couple rounds with QC issues, too much crimp while seating that crushed the case and 1 round didn't fire. Groups were 2'' at 100 yards from a Marlin 1895 22''. I was able to shoot a deer with them and they left a nice hole both in and out. The exit holes were about quarter size if not larger. I give them 9 out of 10 because of the QC issues.

Treestand Wingman: I hunt alone and from a climber so needed something to make things a little safer. It works as advertised because I tried it out in the backyard. I give it 9 out of 10. Its noisy when first hooking it up with the metal carabiner and metal from the Wingman but nothing some tape wont cure.

Lacrosse Aerohead Rubber Boots: Very lightweight and comfortable. My only complaint on them is they don't look like they would be durable when going through prickers and stuff.

The only new kit I bought this year was a Sako S-20 hunter in 6.5 PRC. I killed one largish mule deer doe at 364 yards and one large bodied whitetail buck at about 100 yards or so. The 140 Gr Nosler Accubonds did as expected and both ran a very short distance before expiring. I then hunted Colorado mule deer for 13 days straight and passed up several mature bucks in the 150” to 165” range. I also passed a freak of a 3x4 that was killed by a neighbor and scored 176” B&C,whoops.. I was looking for that classic mule deer monster with a wide U shaped frame, carrying heavy mass, deep forks front and rear and eye guards and didn’t see him, so I ate tag stew. And had a great hunt despite never pulling the trigger.

Any way the point of this post is to report on the new S-20. The rifle is ridiculously accurate, shooting ragged one hole groups at a 100 yards with Accubonds. The action is butter smooth and the trigger is the best out of the box user adjustable that I’ve ever seen and is dead simple to adjust. I love everything about the rifle EXCEPT, she’s a bit heavy and after having carried it for miles upon miles this season was growing a bit weary of the weight. I was using a two point tac sling and will either get another tac sling with a wide pad or switch to the traditional sling studs and use a wider padded shoulder sling in the future.

Winchester model 70 featherweight: (.308 win)
I’ve wanted one for years, but wanted one in .300wsm to replace a Remington 700 that I HATE!!!
I was determined to get it chambered in something I already load so that was either .223, .308, or .300wsm. I ended up going .308 because of cost to shoot while comfortably being in the big game neighborhood.
As far as the rifle itself, it handles like a dream. It shoulders like it is a natural extension of your face. It is light but stiff and just plain pretty. Operating the bolt is as smooth as a mauser-based action should be. It has a better safety than most bolt guns I’ve ever handled, other than perhaps a vz-24.
It was expensive which is relative, but in my mind it was worth every cent. So was the leupold sitting on top of it.
Other than the expense, pretty much perfect. I suppose it’s too pretty. I wouldn’t take it out in the rain like I would a savage or Remington.

Put an illuminated reticle scope on my Marlin 30AS. Because this year was the first time I could hunt from 30 min. before sunrise until 30 min. after sunset. Put on a Vortex Strike Eagle, illuminated reticle, 1-8x 24mm scope with a 30mm tube that was sitting here not being used. Figured it would be good at first & last light, and it is. Played with it before gun season in the evening just after sunset when the light is fading and it does make things better. Except I haven't turned on the illumination while hunting yet. Filled an antlerless tag with it at 3:23 P.M. in broad daylight at about 75-100 yds with the scope set on 3x. But based on my twilight experimentation with it before the season I really like it and perhaps next year I could fill a tag early or late in the day when the light isn't too good. IMG_2800.JPG ..

No new equipment for me this year, at least not that I used. My hunting partner bought a new Jet Sled as was previously mentioned. I got to use it opening day and its worth whatever he paid. We've long used kids sleds/boats for dragging deer, but they're thin and generally fail after a few years. The Jet Sled is much thicker, drags well, and should last lots longer.

I bought a .450 BM upper almost 2 years ago and have yet to use it hunting. Maybe next year.

I agree with the original post about Vortex quality. I finally got the chance to replace a Tasco 3x9 on my old war horse 30-06 deer rifle with a Diamondback 3x9-40. What an upgrade!

I picked up those exact Binos about a year ago, I could not be more pleased with the glass.

The only thing I changed this year was the pistol I carry. Went with a surplus M7 shoulder holster and am carrying an SA Mil Spec 1911 in 45acp.

For snakes, boar, or to put down wounded animals. Comes in handier than you might think.

Tried a new knife this year, Outdoor edge RazorPro. Always thought they were a gimmick, but man did this thing impress me. The gutting blade made opening up the abdomen and up the legs for skinning easier than any other blade I have ever used. The replicable main blade worked like a champ too. It has a heavier backbone than the Havalon so you can use it more like a traditional knife. Impressed me so much I bought several as gifts for friends.

Another honorable mention goes to the Reebok work boots. I normally wear sterling toed cowboy boots, but this time of year I am in the shop on concrete floors. That has become a problem for my feet. These softer soled side zip Reebok are very comfortable, lightweight, deep non-slip lugs. The laces adjust to your foot, then zip up for easy on-off. 20220109_135336.jpg
Crappy pic....but great boots. They would be good early season hunting boots.

I have a pair of Merrels that are pretty much the same thing. Fantastic comfortable daily wear boots. I wear them for everything, work, outdoors etc. Only time I don't wear them in the woods is when it is really cold, I get cold feet very easily and there is nothing worse than cold feet when trying to enjoy the outdoors!

I didn’t buy anything new this year, which kinda surprised me when this thread made me think about it

The only gun that I purchased for myself was a Tisa 1911 45 ACP. No gripes yet. It has fired everything that I have fed it without a hitch. I did find a deal on a Leupold VX 3i 3-9x, so I will probably have to buy a rifle for it. Thinking maybe a Christenson Mesa if I can get rid of a couple of shotguns that I haven't used in 5 years.

Yep!! Merrell hiking shoes are what I use in anything except the cold, wet season. Then its a pair of duck boots with some warm socks.

You can move comfortably in those merrells!

Still swearing by the US Army cold weather undergarments. Also my DarnTough socks.

Oh, also the wool emergency blanket I carry, that's been great too.
