2023 Hunting Picture Thread

I had yesterday off so a buddy and I hit some public land with a Lab and 2 beagles. He says this is either going to be a total nightmare or it will go good. We pushed a CRP field that had multiple thicket patches and thick creek bottoms on the right. The beagles got on several rabbits but it was either too thick to see or the bunny was too small. The lab (9mo) would hear the beagles fire up and want to get in on the mix. One race went several hundred yards and lasted about 30min but neither one of us saw the rabbit. There is just something about beagles in a little holler. We called the beagles off after they chased the rabbit into a hole and proceeded to head back to the truck while pushing the CRP. Another hunter had a Brittany and fired several times at birds. One of the birds he shot at soared about 300-400yards away from him. He moved on and we headed to where the bird landed. Both beagles and the lab we’re looking for it and all of a sudden the dogs flush the bird. I let the bottom barrel of my O/U 20ga go with #5 and IC choke but it didn’t drop it. The bird changed course and was headed right at my buddies face. The bird landed and began running so he shoots at it and now its running the opposite way toward a private land corn field. I let the IC barrel go again and it was still running. I finally rolled him a good 40yards away with the modified barrel.

Went out today with the Browning A5 Magnum. I really like the way this thing shoots. It’s swings better than my Wingmaster. JMB shotgun receivers tend to be more compact and it makes a difference in handling. The Ithaca 37 similarly feels great in hand.

Yesterday was NE firearm deer opener… and I saw a buck chase a doe better than a mile away and across the state line… had a guy come in and sit in my lap and pretty much ruin the rest of my hunt for the afternoon/evening. Oh well…

Currently working about 60 miles out of town installing some new electrical underground lines at a big ranch. Lots of windshield time and lots of dirt road - lots of looking for coyotes! Got a double today, one this morning, and then on the way home, in almost the same place, got #2. Ranch manager was pretty happy, I told him I’ll add “predator control” onto my bill! IMG_4318.jpeg

Bagged a doe for the freezer this morning....

Deer-11-14-2023-1.jpg

She's bigger than she looks in the photo, a nice mature doe. This deer had more fat on it than any deer I've ever cleaned....just unbelievable.

Edited to add: now that I've quartered the deer, I realize that it was younger than I thought, and I didn't get quite as meat off her as I thought I would. A substantial portion of what you see here was fat! Somebody around there must be feeding those deer cake and butter...

Good catch, beautiful birds, congratulations.

Opening day of Illinois firearms deer season.
I was a 200yd walk from my hunting blind where I spent the night to be in the woods at first light. It rained on and off all night so the woods were super quiet this morning. I slept good with the pattering of rain on the tin roof. I made a pot of coffee and toasted some waffles and smoky links for my breakfast before leaving the blind for a walk.

I couldn't pass on this 8pt when he walking in front of me. I love harvesting deer off my own property.
One shot with my new 45-70 Handi-Rifle! 65ish yds.
