I have some 80gr AMax bullets that I would like to try in my 1 in 8 22-250. I have Varget and H380 powders on hand. Anyone have any experience with this bullet using either of those powders. I was thinking of starting out at 26.0 grain varget and seeing how it goes.

Thanks for any help

my guess is that you can get those powders to work but not the optimal burn rate for the heavies in 22-250. You need to use something in the 4350 or 4831 burn rate range...26 gr of Varget is barely 1/2 case full, You can try it but your velocity is going to be slow and your pressures are gonna be high...not what you should be looking for in a load...Chief aka Maxx Load

hate to say your right

Yes, I think you are right. I might just wait until I can get a slower powder to give myself the best chance at making these work. If I can not get them to work, I will be looking to trade off a couple of hundred 80 grain AMax, lol. Picked them up, when nothing else was available.

Just to give the OP an idea I am running 26.0-26.3grs of Varget behind 75-80gr Amax's in my 223 AI. It's a 24" 1:8 and gets 2900-3000fps with them.

Here's a 5 shot group in the .1's

AA, I think the op is talking about 22-250, a much different case and capacity wise in another ballpark...jus' sayin'

brainfart

Thanks for asking about the twist rate in the barrel. I was getting my 22-250 mixed up with my sons .223. Just for the heck of it, I had to try them in my 22-250(which is 1 in 120), guess what, they were not worth loading the 5 that I tried. I loaded up another batch to try in my sons .223(1 in 8 twist).

In case anyone is interested, the other loads I tried in the 22-250 were 55grVMax with 38.0 gr H380 2.375OAL. At 100 yds grouped .750 with a cheap Busnell 3-9 scope out of a Savage Axis

50gr Midway Dogtown bullet with 38.5 gr H380 2.375OAL. At 100 yards grouped .625 out of the axis with the crappy scope and my 58 year old eyes

Will post loads from the 80 gr out of the .223 next week if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the help.

I used 55gr V-max bullets and Varget out of my Savage 22-250 and they flew great! They also were hell on jack rabbits and small game......

I too am a huge fan of Varget and 55gr pills in my .22-250. I have worked up a few loads that seem to work great with different bullets. My SPS-V Stainless seems to dig the Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets more than the Hornady's V-Maxs though. Mine is backed off the lands .010 and is close to Hodgdon book max.

Mine is also a 1-in-12 twist, so I didn't feel the desire to push up to a higher weight. If I wanted that, I would reach for the .243.
