I'm in a little bit of a quandry.

Right now I have a Ruger MKII Stainless Synthetic in .223

I am eyeing a Tikka Whitetail Hunter Stainless Synthetic in 22-250. My hunting rifle is the same but in 25-06.

For an extra $80 of gun cost, do I gain enough to make sense in "upgrading"?

What will the 22-250 do that the .223 won't?

I reload, so ammo cost will be minimal.

Am I gaining enough to put up with the small increase in recoil and noise?

Help, I've got to decide whether to pursue the Tikka.

Thanks,
Steve

223 and 25-06 make a nice combination - i'd think about going to a 30 or 338 as the next step (when you're ready to) instead. I hear there are some nice long-range loadings for 25-06 - but the real question is, what do you want to hunt? I hear 223 is a nice moderate varmit cartridge if you load your own.

Well, now do you really want to know the current roster of rifles?

.17hmr - My main small varmint gun
.22lr 10/22 for plinking and small vermin
.223 Ruger MKII
.223 AR-15 - Might turn this into a varmint gun ie: flat top with scope
.223 MAK90(AK-47) - Killing paper and such
.25-06 Coyotes on up to mule deer
7.62x39 MAK90
.338win - Elk on up

So, I think I got everything pretty well covered. Now I just don't know if the 22-250 would be a better fit, especially if I scope the AR15.

I've admired the .22-250 since long before anybody ever heard of a .223. That said, it's a coyote gun equal to a .223 plus a hundred yards or so. And the difference in recoil isn't enough to matter...

Get the Tikka---an adjustable trigger for the Ruger will cost you near $80 and there is no accuracy guarantee---like the Tikka.

I like Rugers----but Sako/Tikka seem to be getting all my rifle business these days----well----and Bushmaster too.

I'm biased so take what I have to say with a grain of salt...

TIKKA!!!! ALL THE WAY!

Seriously the .22-250 is an excellent round for pretty much 90% of all of what you'll want a rifle to do- great paper puncher and soda can buster out to 400 yds+ with minimal recoil. And the Tikka is a excellent platform; I have the Master Sporter 595 in .22-250 and have never had a complaint.

Since you reload, you'll probally enjoy a .22-250 more.

It's just a little 'more' than .223 in just about every way. More energy. More accurate (or so it seems.) Flatter trajectory.

Since I don't, and loaded .223 is 1/2 (or less) what .223 costs, and can be used in semi-autos, I'd go .223.
