just wondering if any of yall shoot a .22-250 with the 1:14 twist. I been shooting 55 grain bullets, but some friends tell me a 50 grain or smaller bullet will perform better with this twist. I was thinking of going to a 60 or 62 grain partition but I have heard they do not perform well in this twist. any experience on this from you guys out there?

There is what should perform, and what does perform. The best way to see is to try it. 1:14 is typically a bit slow for 55gr+, but with a 22-250 you can get some extra velocity to help spin the bullets faster. Some of these may be right on the edge of stabilization though, so may not keyhole at 100yds but be all over the place at 200. My dad has an older 22-250 with the 1:14 and it has not had a problem with 62's but that is inside 100yds, for the long varmint shots he uses lightweight bullets.

I have shot 60 gr Nosler BT out of a 22-250 Ruger #1 and a 22-250 Remington 700. they shot fairly good (around an inch for 5 shots) although not as good as the 55 gr BT (around a half an inch for 5 shots) and they didn't keyhole

32-45gr will be best suited for that twist. Anything bigger will be a gamble. Some will work some will not.

i believe 55g is right on the edge for 1-14. iirc, the original M16 had a 1-14 twist for the M193 55g projo but had issues in cold or certain environment so they sped it up to 1-12

Until the Army got in the .22 game, a 14 twist was standard for all .22 centerfires except early Hornets. That was enough for a 55 grain flatbase or 52 grain boattail which was all anybody cared about in a benchrest or varmint rifle.
MY 77V .22-250 w 14 twist shoots best with 52 gr SMK.

A 60 grain bullet is right at the ragged edge. Mine is ok with a Hornady 60 gr SP but the slightly longer 60 gr HP is wild. A 60 gr Partition is probably a rather long bullet and may not be stable.

jim is bringing up a good point. the real question is the LENGTH of the bullet not hte weight and a 55 flat base is prob shorter than the 55 FMJ boat tail the army uses. thus, it makes sense the army would need a slightly faster twist, where others might be fine with shorter 55g. no idea how long the partition is

I have a CZ 550 .22-250 with a 1-14" twist. I shoot 50gr. Sierra Blitz kings. I've shot a few .5" and smaller groups with that. The next most accurate load I tried was 52gr. Sierra Matchking....basically it was just as accurate. .5" and smaller, but I thought the Blitz Kings were better Varmint rounds.

The 45gr. Winchester White box bullets shot .5" and bellow. I tried 45gr. Sierra Varminter bullets and they were holding at about 1". 55 gr. Sierra Game King hollow points were holding at about .75" and 55gr. Hornady V-Max were holding around .5"-.75"

So yeah my gun seemed to like anything from 45gr. to 55gr. depending on the bullet. I didn't try anything heavier, it is a groundhog gun and I don't need anything heavier

I have a Browning B-78 with a 1:14 twist. It likes 40gr. V-Max bullets quite a bit. I haven't found too much difference when trying flat base bullets either, but I haven't gone much heavier than 52/53 grain. The 40s probably shoot the best, and hover right around 3,900-4,000 FPS with IMR-4064.

That's what I've found anyway. Good luck with it. It's a great shooting cartridge.

I use this rifle (Ruger No. 1 Varminter) for hogs and deer, currently shooting 55 grain bulletts and best I get are 1 1/2" groups and know I can do better and put this round thru a pigs ear at 150 yards or more. I am overrun with hogs so dont care if they drop or run off, but I know I would like smaller groups.

My 22-250 that was 1:14 liked the lighter bullets. It would shoot 55s ok, but not great like the 50s, 45s, or even 36 grain Barnes Varmint Grenades. It loved them, and at 4400fps they did the job. Might be a little light for hogs though...

My Sako 22-250 Stainless Varminter w/14 twist will shoot one hole at 100yrds with 55gr Hornady V-Max.

Try the 52gr Sierra match, bet you will like it, it never fails me in various guns, 22-250 or 223.
