Been thinking about trying some super colibri ammo out of a Mossberg 22 rifle. I was looking around the internet for more info, and came across this:

20-gr Solid, no powder charge, 500 fps. Use only in handguns! Perfect ammo for teaching a youngster with a .22 LR revolver. Sounds like a loud airgun when fired.

Use only in handguns? I though you could use it in long guns too? Are they afraid that there isn't enough pressure to get it out the barrel?

Your mileage may vary...

I enjoy both Colibri and Super Colibri with my Ruger 77/22, have never had trouble with getting the bullet down range, but remain cautious just the same. The Ruger has a 20 inch barrel.

I have not tested for accuracy or trajectory but can report that I am three for three with the Colibri on mice at 2 yards with the Ruger MkII, one for one on bats at 3 yards with the 77/22.

Be prepared for some extra cleaning chores.

both Colibri and Super Colibri

hmm... I didn't know that there was a just 'Colibri', I though it was all super colibri. What's the difference?

Is it more messy to shoot? Or is just a better idea to keep the bore clean if you're shooting a low power round?

Thanks,
Nick

I shoot Super Colibri's out of my lever and bolt action rifles all the time. None of them has a barrel shorter than 24" and I've never had a problem over maybe 800 rounds of them.

The regular Colibri is much weaker than the Super and a waste of time. The Supers are so quiet you only hear two noises, the click of the firing pin and the "thwap" of the round hitting the paper. My pump pellet gun makes more noise than these.

However, they are loud enough to require earplugs in my Single Six revolver with a 6" barrel.

I don't think they are extremely dirty. Two swipes of a boresnake with CLP and a quick brush across the bolt face is my cleanup with them.

Normal Colibri go ~375 FPS and generate around 7 foot pounds of energy (equal to a .177 pellet from a Crosman 760 pumpmaster on 10 pumps)

Super Colibri go ~575 fps and generate 11 foot pounds of energy

Possible hint:

The "extra cleaning chores have nothing to do with powder fouling, boresnakes, or anything of that sort. They probably have more to do with rags, 409, and mouse scraps.

I picked up some of these little devils today at $1.89 a box. I bought two boxes, and after shooting through the whole first one, determined that:
  • These are safe to fire through my mossberg rifle
  • These little guys aren't that powerful - or noisy
  • I should have bought a brick... these are FUN!
    [/list=a]

    :D

How naieve of me to think that I would only need 2 boxes! :p

The super colibris WILL NOT get stuck in the barrel unless you're using a semi, then they have a small chance.

I like to single load them in a levergun, and a Chipmunk single shot.

They really are quiet enough that they sound like an airgun.

Well I did have one get stuck in a bolt action, 24" gun today. Not sure if it was just a fluke round or what, but I caught it before it fired another one.

On a side note, what's the next step up in power? CB cap? Shorts?

Thanks

I was quite surprised too, but, honest to god, I had one not come out! No little puff of smoke, no barrel resonating sound \ feeling, just kind of nothing. I could tell that the round went off, but nothing else was happening. It was pretty easy to distinguish from a normal Super Colibris round.

I don't think I have the bullet around... I'll see if I can find it for a picture. At any rate I had to push it back down and out the action with a cleaning rod; and after that I cautiously tried another one, and it fired fine. So I don't know. I'm not ready to give up on these things yet, but can anyone tell me what the next proverbial step up is?

Don't bother with the regular Colibris, get the Super Colibris. The Supers are marginally louder, but, at least in my rifles, shoot near my normal zero, just with more drop. The regular ones always grouped off to one side. BTW, I heard that the regular ones had been discontinued. Does anybody know if that's true?

I don't know for sure, but I have heard the same thing.

Also, if any of you desire to order a bulk amount of Super Colibri, order them from Cole Distributing. They have incredible prices and ship immediately. I recently purchased 13.5k Aguila rounds from them (including one brick of Super Colibri) and I couldn't be more impressed with their service or prices.

I use CB Longs out of a Winchester 67 and you could not tell the difference between CB Longs and a pellet gun. Man are they fun. Colibri will only go through one side of a pop can, a Super Colibri will generally go through both sides, CB Longs will go through both sides of a soup can. YMMV. Out of a 10/22 CB Longs will generally single feed out of the mag but some have trouble, just a great excuse to buy a single shot 22.:D
