Quiet please! 22 Ammo test in progress

It is my experience that if you want quiet (or nearly so) then it is 22lr subsonic with a silencer, 22CB unsuppressed or air rifle (CO2 or spring, not pre-charged) in order of decreasing power and noise. Suppressed 22lr subsonic is far more powerful than the other two and capable of 2 moa out to at least 100 yards, this is much better than CB or air.

I still have most of my hearing left. I think the 60 grain Aguilla are loud and with lots of ejection port pop out of my 10/22.

A lot of the noise reduction is dependant on barrel length, for those of us not using a suppressor. The Aquilla SSS is almost silent when fired from the 27" barrel of my Ruger 77/22.

CB Longs and even Remington CBEE ammo are not very accurate in my CZ bolt action rifle at 25 yards. The CBEE Remington is better but still not up to the accuracy of Winchester subsonic ammo. I am hoping to find some of the of this CCI Quiet ammo and see how it groups. I'd like to find some locally if possible.

Testing your ammo in the rifle you plan to shoot it in is critical. You need to know how it shoots in your gun. Don't dismiss ammo because somebody does not have good luck with it.

You're right, I forgot about that. I have found that 22CB's are loud in my 10" contender but much less noisy in my 16" rifles. I have never tested any rim fire in a barrel longer than 20". Thanks.

I haven't tried the others but I have a bunch of Super Colibres. It is a lot of fun to shoot them out of my lever action Remington Nylon 76. Pretty quiet. They also work well in my Marlin Mod 20 bolt action. Real quiet.

I will second that. I have an old remington that has a 28" barrel and wont stabilize them, but is pretty accurate out to 50yds (after that it is a train wreck). All you here is click... whap. The sound of the bolt is louder than the ignition of the powder.

Th nice thing about the Ruger rimfires, at least the older ones, is you can put a long barrel on them fairly easily. The barrel on my 77/22 is one that Winchester made for the Model 52. Just turned the breech end, added the v block and rechambered.

I've been playing around with CCI CB shorts (from Wallyworld) and Aguila Super Colibris (purchased online) in my TC Contender of various barrel lengths (23" bull, 14" bull, and hopefully soon with my new 12" tapered).

I'll have to try out some of the other loads being mentioned...
