.22-caliber accuracy

Most 22 caliber handguns are more "accurate " than you are. Blame it on the gun is the easy part. Now for the hard part?

@frogfurr I took your initial post as comparison, since the MKII is kind of known to be respectably accurate...and the K22 outshoots it. Which it should.
For the OP, if I had $2K to throw at a rimfire revolver, I'd either get the nicest K22 I could find and a couple bricks of really good ammo to feed it...or the 2nd nicest K22 I could find and 3 bricks of ammo.

My most accurate .22 revolvers are my 50’s era S&W pre-18 masterpiece and 6” Colt King Cobra. Even with the 4” barrel and relatively light weight, the S&W will do under an inch at 25 yards with a steady rest and good ammo. Next up is my new Colt King Cobra 6”. Out of the box it would do 2” offhand and 1” or less from a rest. A few days ago I upgraded it with the Kensight Elliason rear, which offers a much improved sight picture at the cost of a bit of bulk. That doesn’t bother me as I don’t carry it. With bigger, better grips, I think I could shoot it even better. I think the new 617s or the classic 17 would be great choices too; I have been underwhelmed by the triggers in recent production S&Ws though so I would not buy one I couldn’t handle first. Hope this helps!

Thank you for posting. That is the first 6 inch King Cobra I have seen! Colt hasn’t even had a photo on their website. Of course, now my life is more complicated, as I was trying to put off purchasing one until the 6” version came out…

My semiauto 22 pistols don't have better triggers than my K2 or Single Six. My nice Rugers and my Browning have triggers that are as good, though. They have larger sights than the revolvers, too.

Even though I'm a revolver guy and prefer them, I can usually shoot the Buck Mark and the Marks I and II a little bit better. Probably because of the big sights.

I prefer revolvers and take a 22 revolver to the range with me on every single visit, but TBH you can get a quality semiauto 22 for much less money than a quality 22 revolver, and it will probably shoot better for you.

:(

Which .22-caliber revolver is the most accurate for general target shooting?
I don't remember whether it came in first or second but back in the late 80s one of the gun mags tested a .22 Freedom Arms and it was the one of the two most accurate revolvers they had ever tested. (the other one of the two was the Freedom Arms in .357 Magnum)

I would not call a cheap plinker accurate, by general target shooting I mean competition and non-competition for fun but small group shots at 50 yards, new firearm under $2,000.
I'm honestly not sure about new revolvers, especially from S&W. My experience over the past decade or so has been pretty negative, and I'm pretty leary of them these days. Other folks will chime in about new guns, I'm sure.

If you have to have new, and it doesn't have to be a revolver, I would consider S&Ws Model 41 semi-auto. It comes in under your price cap, has an incredibly good trigger, and will outshoot every human who ever lived. I am a revolver man through-and-through, but am extremely pleased with my 41.

I've got both a S&W model 17 and 18. Some days the 17 is more accurate, some days it's the 18. Can't go wrong with an older S&W. IMG_20231022_124150_HDR.jpg IMG_20231022_124204_HDR.jpg between the two I probably shoot better with the 18. But both are very accurate.

Sorry. Didn't see where you said new gun under 2000 grand. Personally I'd go with a S&W 617 get a trigger job and spend the rest on good ammo. And mount a green dot on it if so inclined.

Dad's old Single Six is a great shooter. They make em now with up to 10 round cylinders if you're so inclined.
And definitely agree with trying different brands of ammo no matter what you end up with. My 4" Colt Diamondback doesn't like Aguila Super Extra, but it's lights out with some Remington Thunderbolts.
The Ruger Single Six, for some reason or another, doesn't really have a preference. It does better than I can with whatever, although some are a touch better than others

Picture of my 22 pistols. The K22 has a much nicer single action trigger pull. Although the Mark ll is good target gun the trigger leaves a little to be desired compared to the S&W. Both of these are very nice pistols. I can shoot the K22 better.
