.22 LR Shooting Bench

I gave the old chainsaw, and myself, a workout Sat and Sun, mostly Sat, and really opened up the first 50+ yards of the range.

Before Sat.

After 5+ hours Sat. Too tired to clean up the last tree, a sizable pine.

After Sun. I got the trunk of the pine cut up and rolled into the ditch. I'll drag the limbs off and make a brush pile for the critters.

Today I set two 4x4 posts that will hold a KYL rack when finished. It was dry when I started, but I had to set the
left one in the rain. It is halfway down in the ditch, so it sits lower, I'll even them up and tie them together at the top.
Right now I have 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1", and 1 1/4" paddles for the KYL rack. It is at 50 yards from the front of the deck.

Oh yea, made a tank trap to practice shooting off of, we were shooting a 3" plate at 108 yards the other day off the tips and center.

We also set up some paddles on hangers from X Steel & Target Hanging Solutions to test. We set them out at 65 yards.

8" 3/8" galvanized bolts, washers, lock washers, nuts. Make an X with two 4x4s, lay the other one in to look like the pic, bolt it in, then put in the third bolt. One bolt is hidden.

I think this guy did it the same way, except he did not use the third bolt, so it folds up.

Or cheat and use a pre-made brace. Here or Here or Here. Probably elsewhere as well.

It says not to use pressure treated 4x4s as they might be too fat to fit the knuckle, dunno,
I used them since it will be out in the rain all the time, and I didn't use a knuckle.

The tube station company always leaves their extra supplies when they are done with a job, last time it was some 6" pipe for the carriers and a bunch of strut channel they use for mounting transfer stations in the ceiling. So naturally I squirreled it away in the old X-Ray shed where they used to store old film. That was a couple of years or so ago. A couple of months ago it came to me that I could use it to make a good PRS/NRL-22 type barricade to shoot off of, so I did some measuring, cutting, welding, and made one. Today I put it in the ground (Ran short on concrete, but that's an easy fix.)

This pic makes it look around level with the shooting platform, but I am standing downhill from it for the pic. The ground
there is several feet below the platform and the highest part of it is below deck level, and way below the bench top.
The elevations are 2', 3', 4', & 5' above ground level. Shoot those, then drop down to the cross bar, or whatever, kids stay low.

This pic shows how low it is compared to the deck, bottom right in the pic is part of the bench top.
Any shots from the deck will be (should be) well over it. Hot and humid today, whew. :)

Just for fun, I salvaged my mom's old metal folding ironing board for use as a portable shooting bench.... they're all the rage amongst the old eccentric muzzleloader farts....especially the old wooden folding ironing boards.

I also have another portable shooting bench that really belongs to my son. 20220617_120433.jpg

And the spool bench like @South Prairie Jim

Time for insulated shooting shack with air conditioning/heating for all year long shooting in comfort. ;)

Small 5000 btu window AC and propane/electric heater should be plenty.
Perhaps something like this with larger bench top with reloading set up on the left? Notice the seating bench slides forward to make a platform for a bed? If properly insulated, even a small propane heater like Mr. Heater may be enough to keep you warm. :D

Now that’s first class!
After all the work on the trees and sod work, I think you earned it. :p

Just think, when it is raining and cold/snowing where you can't do much "work", you can cozy up in your "shooting shack" and flip open a shooting window to take your shots.

I am thinking about coming up with a shooting setup with our Pacifica back hatch open so I could shoot in the rain during winter months. :)

Life is good.

I’ve always wanted to live in a van down by the river…

And then drive it to Ben Avery, Telladega and Camp Perry.
A rolling shooting shack!:)

A diesel Winnebago toy hauler with twin bump-outs aught to do nicely. Just need a lambo rear door instead of a ramp!
And exterior foldout fencing that extends with the canopy for firing line safety.

The upper turret is for storm observation, I swear!

It occurred to me recently that used moving vans might make an economical RV conversion platform.

Sunday I lengthened the right lane to 150 yards, hung a steel silhouette target there (head is 3.25" wide including the ears, and 4" tall), hung my home made tree bracket up, then hung a 1/4" by 16" square steel target from it at 55 yards (Easy/kids/pistols/etc). I also added a steel hostage target at 100 yards, the paddle is 2.5".

You can see the big 16x16" target in the pic (Yes, I was standing on the top of that ladder to attach the bracket and then hang the target). The other two targets are so far back in the shadows they don't show up. Not even sure the hostage target was hung when I took this pic, maybe not even the silhouette.

I did some more work on the right lane yesterday after work, and today, plus another target in the middle. I added a 12" plate at 70 yards in the middle (Left of KYL)

I added a string of three targets at 95 yards on the right lane. I added a Mexican cowboy at 130 yards on the right lane, and a Zombie at 114 yards on the right lane.
