22 LR will kill a big buck

A good, rugged .22 like my stainless 10-22 would be a number ONE pick if I needed a survival tool for a while. It will kill anything if within 50 yards and properly administered to the cranium of said animal and kill it humanely . This is, of course, illegal in Texas, but I'm talking survival, here. You can pack a LOT of ammo on that survival trek, too. And, if you stumble upon a Walmart, you can get MORE ammo. Sadly, there used to be a lot of little country stores around that had .22, but thanks to the antis in DC in all their "wisdom", that has pretty much ceased to be the case in many areas.

Anyway, my very favorite rifles are my .22s. NO, I don't hunt deer or hogs with 'em, but hey, when I go to the range or just out to my place to plink and fart around, I always have a .22 rifle with me and it gets fired. I grew up with a .22 in my hands and making 50 yard head shots on squirrels. I know that inside 50 yards, I could place my shot right where it need to go if I had to defend myself with it. My main problem is usually which .22 to take, but I have this affection for my 10-22 for plinking and woods bumming. It's my only iron sighted rifle, for one. It's just so handy and such a rugged little gun, I like it a lot. :D

If I were going to dispatch a wounded deer in a residential area, I wouldn't want 30-06, too loud, too powerful. I mean, you could use a gernade if you wanted to, but it's just the wrong tool for the job. I think .22lr is perfect for that job.

+1. Toyota's seem to combine real knockdown power with a compact design.

And I can attest to the fact that a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Mitsubishi Eclipse are effective deer-slaying tools as well. :uhoh:

Yes the deer did attack another deer and assaulted a car but was that grounds for execution?

Right, and believe it or not this is a trend. If you're white, you get a fair trial. If you have brown skin you get shot in the face by the police.

Huh? They killed the buck because it had a broken jaw from the fight-- that is a miserable death and it was humanely put down.

And double huh....

I'd like to see some remotely reliable supporting citation that shows causation between: A.) "Fair" Trials and being White, and B.) Brown skin and getting shot in the face by police in equal scenerios.

That's a bold statement, and one I suspect is indefensible. And it isn't a topic for THR.

As a rancher, I've put down old horses with a single shot from a 22, as well as a cow dying from a vaginal prolapse. They're always shot in a controlled environment, which makes up for the use of the small cartridge. Nothing really newsworthy here.

around here .22 long rifle stingers probably kill more deer than anything else.. they seem to be the violators favorite

Right - the .22 can be a venerable round.

A young man by the name of Chris McCandless used it for his adventures north. He successfully used it to kill a small bull moose as well as the rest of his survival needs while in Alaska.

If you don't know this story I urge you to find the book "Into The Wild" and read it. The movie just came out as well. But I urge you to read the book first and rent the movie later - you'll appreciate the movie alot more.

Have a Happy Turkey Day everyone!

Off topic, but Chris McCandless was vastly unprepared for his adventures and died a horrible death because of it. It is a good book, but the movie, while very well done from the cinematographic persepective, vastly overromanticizes McCandless. I don't want to be the jerk that criticizes a dead kid, but McCandless needed a rifle full of common sense far more than he needed a .22, and that is very evident theme throughout the entire book.

I don't think that we should criticize the dead.
he survived an awful long time in a very unforgiving enviroment,
and it's not like the kid was intending to return from the wild for glory anf fame for surviving up there.
Not many people could do as well as he did, honestly, especially for someone with as little prior experience.

Well, you and I are going to have to agree to disagree on McCandless. That he managed to keep from starving for awhile doesn't necessarily mean that he made the right choices, it means that he was lucky enough to stay alive for a bit longer than he probably should have. I don't want to criticize the kid, but neither do I want to glorify him. That he managed not to die for a relatively long period of time still ends up with him dead.

I beg to differ. I think all of us could, with little or no experience in the wild, manage to starve ourselves to death.

Anyway, I don't want to jack the thread anymore. If you care to discuss this further (and I wouldn't mind having a philosophical discussion with you), lets move it to PM's.
