So i bought a ak thinking the ammo would be cheaper but my friend told me he is buying 223 american eagle ammo for 5 bucks a box at walmart. I buy tula ak ammo for 5 bucks a box. I know its steel case but my ak doesn't care. So in the future is 223 and 7.62x39 ammo going to cost the same as far as the cheapest ammo goes? Or is 7.62x39 going to be cheaper?

If the cheapest stuff you can find is the same as the cheapest ak ammo i may get a ar 15

5.45X39 is the cheap one.

If you're buying ammo by the box you're paying a premium for having too little fun. Look at buying from Aim Surplus or Ammoman or other online dealers and buy half case and case quantities and you'll see real savings and comparative values.

Ammoman
.223 Federal at $319- 1,000 Rounds DELIVERED (~$6.38/box)
7.62x39 Yugo $259- 1,260 rounds DELIVERED (~4.12/box), Wolf $239- 1,000 rounds DELIVERED (~$4.78/box)

5.45x39 $299- 2,160 rounds (~2.77/box)

Wideners
.223 IMI at $318/1200 (~$5.30/box)

I suppose one of these years we may exhaust Russia's vast supply of milsurp 7.62 x 39 ammo, and at that time the cost will rise. Look at .303 British, 7mm Mauser, and good 8mm ammo today. .223 I believe will be with us a while, and cheap brass will be around a lot longer. I'd buy some cheap .223 brass today and throw it in the back of the garage against that day.

I recently bought some 7.62x39 ammo for $180 for 1000. Cabela's had a $30 off of $150 purchase and had a sale going on for $3.99 for a box of Herter's 7.62x39 ammo.

Same can be said of the steel cased .223 ammo as well.

use ammoseek.com

Cheapest non corrosive ammo is about $0.21/rd
Wolf from J&G Sales

Russian surplus is cheaper, but usually corrosive (Yugo from AIMSurplus is $0.18/rd)

All that lovely gorgeous Russian Steel cased 7.62x39 is new production (unless Ivan opened the boxes stamped 2009/10 on the wrappers and re-sealed it).

With some exceptions, online is the best way to buy ammo. I've seen deals in "tins" where the ak and ar ammo sell for about the same for Russian, not the finest but good enough.

For me I pay $4.50 a box at my local Wal Mart for 7.62x39 or .223. Since I have both an sks and an ar I think it's nice that I can shoot them both for the same price and not have to wait on shipping. Only ammo that I personally get online is my 7.62x54r, 8mm mauser, 7mm mauser and my pistol ammo since I'm not 21 yet

THe last time i bought bulk ammo was $150 for 1000 rds , this was at Academy Sports in 2009 when they had a sale going on. Then that same year i had 1000rds of Yugo surplus from Centerfiresystems for $200 shipped.
