I'm looking at a used Browning A Bolt target rifle (223 Rem) with a heavy barrel. According to the SN it was built in 2004. I was told the twist rate is 1/12". Does that sound right?

I plan to shoot 55 and 62 grain bullets at paper (200 yards), won't be used for anything else.

Any help would be appreciated.

Featuring a laminated wood stock (with adjustable comb), heavy-contour 28″ button-rifled barrel, and single set-trigger, the new Browning should be effective in F-TR (target rifle) class. (Sorry, Browning hasn’t released the set-trigger’s end pull-weight.) With detachable box magazines, and a quick 60° bolt lift, these rifles may also proove popular with tactical shooters (though tac guys may want to shorten the barrels). The .223 version also would make a nice varminter.

The .223 has a 1:9″ twist while the .30-caliber guns come with a 1:10″ twist rate.

I'm not sure if this is a target model or a hunter. The stock is black poly run of the mill field configuration. The barrel is heavy contour for sure. I think this may be a stalker model. Estimated weight about 8 lbs. I guess that makes it a hunter with 1/12 twist.

I'll get a pic tomorrow with my cell phone. Thanks.

You could try the old "patch on a cleaning rod" trick - see how much linear travel there is of the rod for one rotation. It will get you pretty close.

That is where I would be going with it.

My bolt gun is an older Remington 700 VSSF with the 1:12 twist. Using 55gn and lighter bullets it is a tack driver but anything above 55gn things get ugly pretty quick. You want to be sure of the twist rate.

Stalkers have a normal barrel contour, a matte finish and composite stocks
Target models have the heavy barrels..
