I have some 69 grain Sierra MatchKings and need load data (starting and max) for use with Varget powder in the .223. The rifle I am using is a Rem 700 LTR with a 1 in 9" twist barrel. Any information is greatly appreciated!

Go to www.hodgdon.com and look under their load-data section.

As for charge weights, well, I don't ordinarily give out load data, but try 24.5gr of Varget and those Sierras. Trust me! ;) MV will be a little low, but your rifle should shoot well from 100 to 300 yards with it. This is a standard load for many AR-15 shooters in Highpower, though many of us use 75/77gr bullets instead at the 200 and 300 yard events.

I had this discussion one night with another AR shooter. He and I found we were using identical loads. (I had just outshot his score with a sling and irons vs. his varmint rig with big moon-scope and bipod.) He was talking about trickling charges, weighing cases and bullets, etc. I laughed and told him, "I just set the thrower so it's averaging close, grab a batch of Lake City cases, open a box of Noslers or Sierras and go to work. I'd rather be shooting!"

This is data from the Hodgdon 2006 Annual Manual:

.223 Remington
Case: Winchester
Twist: 1 in 12"
Barrel: 24"
Trim. 1.750"
Primer: Winchester SR

Bullet: 69gr Sierra HPBT
Diameter: .224"
Col: 2.235"

Varget Starting Load Charge: 24.0
Varget Starting Load Muzzle Velocity: 2784 fps
Varget Starting Load Pressure: 39,200 CUP

Varget Maximum Load Charge: 26.0C
Varget Maximum Load Muzzle Velocity: 3010 fps
Varget Maximum Load Pressure: 50,200 CUP

Wanderinwalker, your buddy must be a poor shot... I have yet to encounter anyone who shoots close to my varmint rigs with irons past 100...

Ardent, repectfully, you've never met someone with the "right" irons yet. Especially the guys shooting 0.5MOA @ 1000 yards at Palma! :)

Review http://www.6mmbr.com/index.html for more information on the types of sights typically used.

Sorry Ardent, he did shoot really, really well that night too. Still beat him! ;)

On a good day, slung-up tight into my AR and really holding and squeezing, I'm down in the 1.5-MOA range. Total group will sometimes be greater than that, but a 196-7x beats a 195-15x any time. Actually, one day I managed a 12x with my AR, I think it was a 194 with a couple of mystery 8s at 11-11:30.

As a point of reference, the 300-yard NRA MR-63 prone-slow target has an X-ring less than 3" across.

And don't make me bring along Larry Racine and Pete Desantos and some of the others if we need to go for just "somebody" who can shoot that well with irons...
