.22LR Megathread II

I have not cared for Remington .22LR ammo for a long time, but the 4.7 cents a round price for the "Bullet Buckets" might be worth trying.

Farm & Fleet rocks! When I call there, the people are knowledgeable about 22 ammo and they tell me if they have it in stock or not and they usually have some in stock.

When I was trying to get enough ammo for my kids to do an Appleseed shoot I was able to get the .22LR at Farm & Fleet.
Fleet Farm is ok they kind of gave me a hard time when we wanted to buy 2 buckets. One for me and one for the wife. They had to have her pay for her separate even though it is all the same money. Was a little annoyed at that. So I asked the lady what would happen if one of my kids that shoots and is under 18 wanted to get some for them to shoot? They cannot pay for it themselves as they are under 18. She said I could not get any. Kind of a dumb rule but it their rule.

I used to love Remington Golden Bullets. I'd buy them at Coast to Coast hardware store and they were, well... they were golden. I never had a problem with them, they just worked in every 22 I had.

Maybe I just got a bad box recently, but it seems the new Golden Bullets are not the same. The cases had marks on them, the bullets seemed awfully wobbly in the case - I can spin the bullet 360° in the case where I can't do that with CCI. I get the occasional dud with the Remington Golden Bullets now.
Yes many of the ones I took out to look at were able to turn the bullet in the case all the way round. We will see how they work. Will probably just use them in the bolt action rifles or the revolver then.

Stopped at the Columbus, Ohio Cabela's today around 11:00 AM. They had quite a few boxes of the Winchester 222 round boxes, copper plated 36 grain HP at $14.99. Also had quite a few bricks (500 rounds) of the high end target ammo at I think $85 a brick. So the Winchester stuff was about 6.75 cents per round. Will likely stop on Sunday on the way home to Cleveland and see what's new.

Ehhhhh..... not bad. Better than online pricing on the Winchester 222s. Are they high velocity rounds?

The packages of 222 count are the 36 Grain Hollow Point Copper Plated Bullets 1280 FPS Velocity. As I mentioned, on our return trip Sunday, The shelves for 22 LR were well stocked but I wasn't taking notes on everything that was there. :)

I have not seen any in northern Indiana stores in quite some time. I remember, once .22lr was like the stars, now it has gone the way of the buffalo...
I've gotten quite a few in the last month or so. Dick's in Merrillville and Mishawaka, Gander Mountain in Merrillville, Walmart in LaPorte, cabelas in Hammond. Probably close to 4,000 rounds

Midwest in Mishawaka has it all the time

Got a 500 round brick of Federal 40grain at Cabelas in Hamburg, PA on Saturday morning for 39 dollars.
Sweet deal. Is that stuff standard velocity (1070ish fps) or high velocity? (1200+) Yeah it's a lot more expensive than two years ago but it's available and I'd buy it.

Within the last week, the WM in O'fallon, IL, got in some special CCI ammo in a 300 rd box. The problem is that they are selling that CCI for about the same price (~$23) as the bulk Winchester 555's they USED to have.

Yesterday, they had some of those same Winchesters in a 222 rd. bulk box (36 gr HP) for only $10.97 (4.9 per rd.!)which is less than I paid at the O'fallon Gander Mountain that opened about a month ago. They had 3 boxes of the 222s so I asked the clerk how many I could get (3 !!) but with the other purchases I had made at Gander, I only took 2 of them.

Time to start watching WM shelves again!

I finally wandered into that new Gander Mountain store a couple of weeks after they opened. I wasn't impressed. They had a lot of stuff, but their prices were bordering on ridiculous (S&W 637 MSRP is $469, they had it at $449 - my LGS has it for $379).

As for rimfire ammo, they had mounds of it. Mostly bulk packs of Winchester and Remington, but a fair amount of higher end stuff, too. Prices weren't awful, but they certainly weren't what I expected from a "Grand Opening" sale. I've been told they pull stock from other stores when they open a new one. I haven't been in there since, so I have no idea what their inventory is like now.

I did see a few 50 round boxes on the shelf at the Highland, IL Walmart a few weeks ago, which is the first time I've seen any at all there in the last year-and-a-half.

I visited the new Cabelas store in Ringgold GA (Chattanooga TN) area when it opened. Zero 22 LR. So much for grand openings, good prices, and moving or diverting stock from other stores for the grand opening at least in terms of 22 rimfire. I noticed that Sportsman Guide has quite a bit of 22 in stock as of the other day. Not cheap as far as I'm concerned and I really don't want their no-name stuff just to "have" some 22LR in my cache. Of course, I already have a lot on hand, so I can be choosy.

My favorite plinking or general purpose 22LR is Federal HV.

Zero 22LR at a Wal-Mart near Mason OH today. Rest of shelves had reasonable stock of stuff. Nobody at SG counter.

a bucket is 1400 rounds. Have you even considered leaving that second bucket for someone else to buy ? Someone who maybe has not being able to find any 22 ammo in a long time, instead of "your wife" buying it in order to beat the system.

OK, I take back every bad thing I ever said about Remington's Golden Bullets.

My daughter had an Appleseed shoot today and the 36gr Federal Champion HPs were failing in her Marlin 795, I switched to Golden Bullets and we went through about 500 rounds without a hitch.

The Remington HP Golden Bullets shot like champs.

Remington GB are not that bad. On my S&W 15-22 they give me a failure rate of about 2% to me that's acceptable. What is not acceptable is paying .10 cents per round on Remy GB. I don't mind paying .10 or even more for good ammo but not dirty GB

New Field and Stream store in Hoover AL has 22LR in stock for the past couple weeks since they opened. As of Saturday afternoon had a pallet of 325 count Federal Automatch for $19.99 sitting next to a few hundred Remington buckets-o-bullets 22's. I think the buckets were about $100. Also had remington quiet 22LR in stock - $8 for 100 rounds. Most folks looked at the ammo but didn't see many picking up a box.
