ok i wanna set up one of my rifles for longer range target shooting...not competetively just for my own enjoyment...my debacle is whether to use my 243 or my 30-06...both are nef handi rifles haven't had much trigger time with the 30-06 but the 243 has put 3 shots inside an inch at 100 yards shootin 100gr. remington corelokts...i'd prefer to just use one of these rather then a new rifle for financial reasons

lol...the core-lokts are the only thing that grouped decently...i tried powerpoints and the sellier&bellet soft points and neither would put 3 shots under an inch and a half...

I love my 223 and 308 survivor. if you want a solid funcional longer range gun and you can afford it order a 25-06 barrel for you gun. its a damn good 500 yrd gun and hell on coyotes out to 700( the farthest I've ended somethin at). any how if not go the 243 with some 100 hornadys

I have both 243 and 30-06. For long range targets, I'd give the edge to the 243. But I have to say that the furthest I've used either rifle is 400 yards and the 06 hit as often as the 243 at that range. The 243 is a lot more shoulder friendly, though.

I have 243 and love it, I have not shot farther than 400. We have a spot to shoot 500 and can get 750. Hopefully we get to shoot there in the next couple of weeks, just waiting for my new scope to come in. By the way if you hand load try the Berger VLD bullets, they are shooting very well for me. As far as factory loads the Rem. with the 90gr scirrco shot very well but the best factory load was the Winchester Supreme Elite 95 gr XP3. I shot a 1" 3 shot group with that load at 400yds. The down side is they are very expensive to shoot often. I would think about hand loading much more cost effective.

Good Luck,
David

i had planned on gettin started handloading anyways...regardless of choice i plan on puttin a good scope a bipod and a choate varmint stock and forearm...

"...Remington Core-Lokts..." Those are excellent hunting bullets. There are match grade 6mm bullets. Mind you, a Handi-Rifle doesn't have the barrel or trigger to get the most accuracy with 'em. Dandy for inexpensive shooting though. Forget the bipod on a Handi-Rifle.
"...shoot 500 and can get 750..." Not with a .243. A Remington factory 100 grain bullet sighted in at 200 drops -45.4" at 500. Like a brick between 300 and 400.
"...a 1" 3 shot group with that load at 400yds..." Nothing personal, but I'd have to see that to believe it. What rifle?

I have owned a few NEFs. a couple of tack drivers,a couple of scatter gun type. one broke over after I shot, scary!! overall, the .243 dont kick, the '06 does and in an NEF the '06 will hurt you. if you are going for overall accuray spend more money.

^+1 Handi rifles are very lot, and that does not mix well with a 30-06. For hunting, you are firing 1 or 2 shots so a big boomer isnt too bad. But for target shooting you want to be able to put a bunch downrange.

what is going to be your longest long range? If over 600 yds, go with the 30.06.
Not that a 243 can't do 1000 yds, but you need a very good rifle, with freakin great bullets; usually expensive as well. I shoot some 105 grain vld's , that i got on sale, at a gunshow, for 27 bucks a box, in 243.
if shooting longer than 600, try to find some 30.06 in at least 180 grains, to get you way out there.

Saxon... now now....
there is a dude over on rimfirecentral, that will do trigger jobs on nefs', and there is a thread over there, the marlin thread, where I think you can do a search, to do a trigger job yourself.
Also, it may be the same dude, who will do a h/r(not sure about an nef) and will make a stub of your rifle, true it up , thread it, then thread your bbl to the stub.
your accuracy will suddenly be in the Lilliputian region, especially with a good trigger job. He once did a trigger for me, that ended up at 11 ounces.
Can't remember his name though... look through their sponsors, or ask on the Marlin thread.

I know it sounds like crap and I wasn't even going to post it but I do tell the truth. It was only a 3 shot group and I was shooting 95 gr Winchester Supreme XP3 bullets. The gun is an Icon Precision Hunter matted with a 4.5x14 Leupold Vari-X III using Leupold Mark 4 Bases. I am consistently shooting 5 shot groups less than .5" @ 100yds using the 95 gr Berger VLD bullet loaded with 39 grs. of IMR 4350, Winchester Brass and CCI BR Primers. Now the 1" @ 400 was the best group @ 400 the others were 2" and all three shot groups but I do tell the truth. Also I have only shot 5 groups @ that range. Below is a picture of the rifle.

Since shooting those groups I have pruchased a new Bushnell 4200 6x24 scope and was able to get about a pound out of the trigger. Which I am hoping will help with the shooting @ distance.

By the way the COAL on the Berger VLD is 2.819 which is backed of the lands .12 This COAL shot better than being seated right on the lands. Anyway take it or leave I am enjoying shooting this rifle!

By the way all groups were shot off of a Uncle Buds Bull Bag along with a rear bag as well.

David

I am not a big fan of the NEF.Fro the same money you can get a mossberg bolt gun.But the 243 is a nice round my wifes loves shooting that .I like the 30-06 better

for the money yes but i already have the handi rifle and cant afford to purchase a whole new rig...so i wanna put a decent scope on what i have and make do...as i said i dont plan on shooting competitively with it..and i'm lookin at longet shots bein 600-800....the trigger on the 243 doesnt feel that bad the 30-06 feels a little heavy tho
