All good answers. The original question makes me want to puke. Girls gun? My wife carries a custon made 5 shot revolver in 45 colt. Think S&W model 36 size. No fun to shoot but it'll darn sure get the job done.

Let's try this again (original version was lost in forum glitch earlier today).....

I don't think that there are 25 must have guns. Really "must have" can be limitted to maybe three or four.

1. Carry Gun / House Gun - CZ P-01 or P-07 or Ruger SR9 /SR9c or Stoeger Cougar / Cougar Compact or Para Ordnance Companion

2. Small Carry Cun - CZ 2075 Rami or Bersa Thunder .380 or S&W Model 60 (2.125" barrel) or CZ 82

3. Pocket Gun - Kel Tec P-32 or P-3AT (LCP) or Bersa Thunder .380cc or Kahr P380 or Beretta Tomcat

4. Rifle (hunting) - Marlin 336 or CZ 550 or Remington 770 (Personally want a .303 British)

5. Rifle (defense) - AR 15 in 5.56 or AK 47 in 7.62 x 39

6. 1911 - Colt Government Model Series 70 or 1991A1 Government

You can take number 2 off since number 3 will cover the same ground. Number 6 really isn't a "must have" in the strictest sense. For me though every American should own a model 1911 at some point.

1. .38/.357 Snubnose Revolver - NONE
2. Pump Shotgun- M1897 trench gun
3. An Old West Style Gun- Marlin 1894

These proposed lists are not "collections" but rather "accumulations." As Churchill said, "This pudding has no theme." A "proper" collection, to my mind, would be something like U.S military weapons, guns of the Old West, Winchesters, Colts, WWII infantry rifles of every country, etc. The categories mentioned in the proposed lists would be relevant only within a given theme.

You can have a specialized collection featuring a single theme. I think those are some the nicest kinds of collections.

In the original post/title, the use of "proper" was meant to describe a well-rounded collection with examples representative of significant "key types" of firearms. For example, a "proper" zoo park would have bears, monkeys, big cats and little bit of everything. This is opposed to other zoo parks that cater to a specific breed or single type of animal, like a big cat sanctuary or alligator park.

Sorry, if that was misunderstood or taken out of context by anyone.

P.S. As others suggested, rather than being upset, use it as an excuse to buy more guns and broaden your horizons. Conversely, if you are only interested in a very specific niche of the firearms world; then you REALLY NEED to be certain to own as many variants of a specific type to have the best representation of firearms from said niche. That way you still have a reason to buy more guns. (wink)

I don't know if I can limit my choices to only "25". :D

I just had to say it. You know, most firearm owners will own nowhere near 25 guns at one time in their lifetime. Priorities....

InkEd

I think you should add a category along the lines of black powder or flintlock/percussion guns as well.

You need to add in a single shot rifle from the pre-1903 era. I expanded it to that year so include the Stevens 44 1/2. However, as it was originally developed the Stevens couldn't handle a cartridge much larger (if at all) than a 38-55. Modern reproductions have a frame size increase and allow the chambering in such cartridges as to include 45-100 or 45-110.

Now of course the following is my opinion.

Basically THE single shot rifle to have a is a quality reproduction of an 1874 Sharps. Now I will be a bigot and specify one from the Shiloh Rifle Co in Big Timber Montana. The fit and finish of these rifles are exemplary and they just have that certain "feel" to them.

If the caliber is chosen correctly, then smokeless rounds are available, but the majority of folks usually create black powder rounds, ie: Black Powder Cartridge Rifle (or BPCR for short).

While they are not exactly the least expensive firearm by any means, they carry a wealth of history and just are a blast to shoot. (pun intended)

The movie Quigley Down Under featured a Sharps percussion rifle that was converted to be a BPCR rifle. Tom Selleck starred in this film. In the film the rifle was shown to have extreme accuracy even with the iron sights of the day. They actually were as accurate as portrayed. The chambering of the Quigley rifle was 45-110.

"Proper" to you isn't "proper" to me, collecting is different for everyone. That's what makes it interesting. Some of these categories I don't have, nor intend to. Others I'm drowning in! Lets see how I pan out - Just one from each category right?

1. .38/.357 Snubnose Revolver - S&W Model 60
2. Pump Shotgun - Winchester Model 12. My favorite pump shotgun.
3. An Old West Style Gun - Colt SAA
4. Polymer Service Pistol - A Glock 17 I'm currently trying to peddle. No more polymer after this one foray into it.
5. Large Bore Revolver (.41+) - Smith and Wesson Model 29-2
6. Defensive Carbine (aka Assualt/Black Rifle)- Colt SP1
7. .22lr Pistol - Hammerli 208
8. European Mil Surp - Don't have one, but I might eventually get an Enfield
9. .38/.357 Target or Service Revolver - S&W K-38
10. .45acp 1911 - Colt Commercial
11. American Mil Surp - 1903a3
12. "Something for your Wife/Girlfriend" - Ruger MK II
13. .22lr Rifle- Winchester 52
14. Wonder Nine Pistol - Browning Hi Power
15. Pocket Pistol/Mouse Gun - Colt 1908 Vest Pocket .25
16. SxS or O/U Shotgun - AyA and Browning Superposed
17. <20oz CCW Pistol - Don't have one. Maybe a LCR in the future.
18. NFA/Class III - Reising
19. Firearm You Forgot You Owned - A pair of old Kimmel AP-9s that sat in a closet for a decade.
20. Something "Evil Looking"- I don't have any "evil" looking guns. I do have guns that say " I mean business" however, so we'll go with a Powder Springs M10 with the Sionics can. In a small space like a hallway, its pretty ugly.
21. "Pair of" or Duplicate Gun - Colt 1903s
22. Curio and Relic - Not into milsurps really. I do have lots of old guns though.
23. Inherited/Gifted Firearm - Colt Camp Perry
24. Bolt Action Hunting Rifle - Winchester Model 70
25. Something that made your wife/girlfriend angry - None of them has.

20. Something "Evil Looking"- antis would say all of them
21. "Pair of" or Duplicate Gun- Stevens SXS shotguns, Savage 24s
22. Curio and Relic- Several that would apply, but don't have a C&R license
23. Inherited/Gifted Firearm- all but 2 of them fall into this category
24. Bolt Action Hunting Rifle- too many to name, including centerfires and rimfires
25. Something that made your wife/girlfriend angry-see question 12

Also I would add lever guns...I have 1 Winchester 94, a Marlin 39A and a Mossberg Palamino
Maybe add single shot rifle as well, also have several of those
