3" .410 shells to 2.5" shells

Can 3" .410 shells be converted to 2.5" shells after they begin to split from multiple reloads? I have tried it and it seems it should work but I'm getting wrinkles in the shell walls just above the brass case head. Does the tip need to be thinned for proper crimping or am I wasting my time?
