"my only gnawing were when i was stupid enough to try to break up a fight.made mistake when i pulled 90 pound lab off 35 pound border collie. border collie saw it as you hold her i'll bite her . lab didn't like it lunged hard at her . i had hand wrapped in labs collar and she snatched me into air and i hit in middle right as they closed. ouch. they never have gotten more than one bite. they seem to freak when they realize what they did. ends fight but not my favorite method. most of my fight toubles eneded when they worked out the shift in pack dominance. the collie yielded to the lab after whuppin her for 5 years.
you had problems with stun gun? i've never even had to zap one the noise makes all mine sit down. not sure if its just noise or the arcing or some sense beyond mine that causes it but the dogd have always quit. even new ones i foster. i am down to 3 but keep up to 20 at times. all kinds and in my life the pits and rotties aren't the problems. its ones like mighty mouse my border collie that are more trouble. shes a riot though absolutely fearless ans sneaky. she will get under moms suv when she wanted to mess with big dogs she can stand under it they can't gives her the edge.
they packed a couple coyotes other nite killed one. its a caution to watch the transformation from loving pet to ferocious and back to pet.
my worst gnawing i was knocked down and after she nailed me the lab came up and licked me whimpering. she was so sad i was laughing and i promise i never ever will lock my hand in a dogs collar like that. one somersault is enough. my wife is looking the dogs over for cuts while i'm bleeding like a stuck pig. dogs were ok i could look out through slash in closed eyelid.
and total elapsed time was probably under 2 seconds. thats why i feel for those cops. a determined dog attack is a force that can be underestimated easily.i try not to make that mistake at least not twice."
That's much clearer. It sounded like the dogs just suddenly attacked you.
As you now know, it's never a good idea to get in the middle of a dog fight. You can end up with them BOTH seeing YOU as the threat.
Have I ever had a problem with a stun gun? No. But I think it sounds like a pretty cruel thing to do to a dog. I knew of a trainer once that said the best way to train a "vicious" dog was to string it up by its leash over a swingset until you choked it unconscious. The stun gun treatment, to me, sounds sort of like that.
I don't think a stun gun would go very far towards helping you build the dog's trust or gaining its obedience. If you're going to use physical pain as a deterrent to bad behavior, the dog can't associate the pain with you or it won't trust you. For example, if you get an electric fence, you always have to let the dog get shocked on its own. You can't lead it over the line or coax it over, as it will associate you with the pain and doesn't even know what it did wrong. If it gets shocked on its own, it associates the behavior with the pain.
I bet an airhorn would work much better or, if you can yell as loud as I can, just let them have it verbally. They also make whistles which you can't hear but will PETRIFY a dog. Not to mention remote collars which deliver shocks far more mild than a stun gun (with the shock collar, the dog can't tell it was you).
I'm glad the pack has sorted itself out for you. The most important thing to do is to establish yourself as the alpha. Then even if the others start to fight, they usually stop when they realize they've gotten you angry.
Remember that dogs, unlike people, don't WANT to be bad. Even when they fight, the majority of the time they aren't trying to do serious damage.
