(CBS) WAUKEGAN, Ill. A pit bull owner in Waukegan has been charged with reckless conduct after his dogs mauled a little girl.

CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports the savage attack has some city lawmakers looking to strengthen Waukegan's dangerous dog ordinance.

Fifty stitches and three days after being attacked by two pit bulls, 8-year-old Sierra Riley is recovering while playing with her own dogs. The third grader was playing on the slide at Waukegan's Roosevelt Park Sunday when police say the pit bulls forced open their owner's basement window, ran for the park and attacked.

"I started yelling and I tried to push them off me when they jumped on me," Riley said.

Waukegan Police Department Commander Mark Stevenson said that witnesses describe the situation as "the two dogs playing tug of war with the girl."

The mother of other kids playing in the park pulled Sierra from the dogs, risking her life to save the girl's.

Police then tracked the dogs back to owner Joseph Hernandez's house, where they shot one after both ran for the officers.

"I feel terrible, beyond words," Hernandez said.

Hernandez said he got the dogs two months ago and stresses the incident was an accident.

"They're great dogs," he said. "They've never had this problem before."

Police call it an accident, too, but the attack has renewed aldermanic debate about dangerous dog legislation and pit bulls as pets.

"I've seen that our officers have shot more than a handful of these dogs over the last year," Stevenson said. "So it seems to be a pattern that obviously these dogs are dangerous."

But Riley's mother doesn't believe that pit bulls -- like her own -- should be banned.

"I feel it's the owners, the household, the environment that the dogs are brought up in, and I don't hate the breed whatsoever," Mindy Riley, said.

Why do you think this has anything whatsoever to do with guns? Even lamer, you don't even have anything to say on the matter. Why show up on a gun forum and copy-and-paste an article about dogs with nothing to contribute? Is this some kind of revenge? Did we go to your forum and copy and paste articles on something totally inane, like an article on how bread is made or something?

Poor Dogs Must Have Been Trained Wrong Or lack there of training by owner or prior owners i doubt they had to shoot the dogs why not hit them with that more costly Taser on the hip :(

Let's see...I'm being charged by two aggressive dogs. Which am I going to pull - a single shot Taser or my duty weapon with 15(?) rounds available? Tough choice.

Mabey the dogs where just gona knock the cop down and start licking his face and he took those extra wrikles on the pups face as an agresive look it could happen.:neener:

Geez, they always say that. Then again, when they catch criminals, they always say that the criminal was never in trouble before.

I don't know about you guys, but I don't care how well a pit is trained, I don't trust it. Then again, I'm not a dog lover so I don't like dogs in general.

So what happened to the other dog? I know a dog owner who is also pro-RKBA, and he told me that thought he loves his dogs, if one of them ever attacked a child or another innocent, he would have no problem taking it out back and putting it down with a rifle.

So you admit to being uneducated about pit bulls yet you think they are bad dogs. Pit Bulls have a tendencey to be aggressive, yes, but towards other dogs and animals. Dog fighters have to handle the dog during a matched fight and any man biters are usually killed. Now that pit bulls have risen in popularity over the years and are known for their aggressiveness so POS criminals try to turn them against man. And that is usually done with forms of torture. I have been around many many pit bulls and never met one man aggressive dog. Now if I frequented ghetto areas, I'm sure i'd find a few. Any real dog person would not recommend a pit bull as a personal defense dog unless you want it licking the criminal to death. Take one, beat it, dont feed it, keep it chained, I'm sure youll wind up with a man agressive dog. But most likely it would bite the owners sorry butt one day. That goes for any breed.

What’s to say? There have been many threads of this type here. I didn’t say anything because I wanted to just to let the facts speak for them selves. It is a polarizing subject in the past at THR. Your welcome over at anytime.

What’s inane is your attitude and I’m sure you could find a post here concerning bread because at one time or another we have posted about everything

I have zero sympathy for dog owners who can't control their animals, and due to their negligence, allow these creatures to maim or kill people.

Yes, and all of those have gotten locked for being off topic. Do you think that means the board condones them, and that is why you made this useless bandwith wasting thread?
