I'm sure we can file this under the stupid question category, but if the dog had a good hold on the LEO's leg and his partner hit it with a Taser would the LEO be lit up as well?

?

i've been gnawed pretty good by my dogs. and thet are family pets. i sympathise with how scary that is.i got stun gons around house to keep it from happening again.

family pets? :banghead: hmmm, maybe those dogs don't have the best temperament. :what:

She said the officers had been chasing a teenage boy whom they saw smoking marijuana on the stairwell

I won't say it, I won't say it, I won't say it, I won't say it....

You sure are no longer the alpha in the pack. It sounds like you have let the situation get out of control and you now need professional help with those dogs.

By the way, dogs don't respond to stun guns with loving obedience. In fact, that could be why you're getting bitten.

It is quite possible to train any dog to never bite anyone unless you want it to happen. It's also not very hard. Lots of places have basic "positive reinforcement" dog training classes, and they don't cost very much. You should take one.

I've had or dealt with german shepherds, rotweilers, and pit bulls. Never have I been afraid of getting bitten. When dogs bite, it is in self defense. Either to protect you, or because they are afraid of you. I'm guessing the latter in this case.

it was a guess

my only gnawing were when i was stupid enough to try to break up a fight.made mistake when i pulled 90 pound lab off 35 pound border collie. border collie saw it as you hold her i'll bite her . lab didn't like it lunged hard at her . i had hand wrapped in labs collar and she snatched me into air and i hit in middle right as they closed. ouch. they never have gotten more than one bite. they seem to freak when they realize what they did. ends fight but not my favorite method. most of my fight toubles eneded when they worked out the shift in pack dominance. the collie yielded to the lab after whuppin her for 5 years.
you had problems with stun gun? i've never even had to zap one the noise makes all mine sit down. not sure if its just noise or the arcing or some sense beyond mine that causes it but the dogd have always quit. even new ones i foster. i am down to 3 but keep up to 20 at times. all kinds and in my life the pits and rotties aren't the problems. its ones like mighty mouse my border collie that are more trouble. shes a riot though absolutely fearless ans sneaky. she will get under moms suv when she wanted to mess with big dogs she can stand under it they can't gives her the edge.
they packed a couple coyotes other nite killed one. its a caution to watch the transformation from loving pet to ferocious and back to pet.
my worst gnawing i was knocked down and after she nailed me the lab came up and licked me whimpering. she was so sad i was laughing and i promise i never ever will lock my hand in a dogs collar like that. one somersault is enough. my wife is looking the dogs over for cuts while i'm bleeding like a stuck pig. dogs were ok i could look out through slash in closed eyelid.
and total elapsed time was probably under 2 seconds. thats why i feel for those cops. a determined dog attack is a force that can be underestimated easily.i try not to make that mistake at least not twice.

Had a sneaky doberman lunge at my family jewels once. By the time my periphial vision picked up movement the dog was already in mid-air. :what: I punched it in the ear. That knocked it's trajectory off enough that the mouth wrapped around my upper leg. If it had not been unconcious it would have torn my femoral artery out. No doubt.

It all happened so quick that I just stood in amazement. When the dog came to (looked so peaceful laying there snoring :D) it got up, took a look at me still standing my ground, put it's tail between it's legs, and slinked away looking back over it's shoulder to make sure I wasn't pursuing. Probably wondering if anyone got the license of that truck :neener:
That dog had some serious mental issues!

Give me a baton against an attacking dog and I guarantee there's nobody piecing that dog's skull back together again. People were bred to use clubs ya know.

Shooting's good if you are prepared in advance. In an apartment setting I'd be too worried about people living down below to shoot a dog though. I do not consider my life to be more important than theirs.

That's much clearer. It sounded like the dogs just suddenly attacked you.

As you now know, it's never a good idea to get in the middle of a dog fight. You can end up with them BOTH seeing YOU as the threat.

Have I ever had a problem with a stun gun? No. But I think it sounds like a pretty cruel thing to do to a dog. I knew of a trainer once that said the best way to train a "vicious" dog was to string it up by its leash over a swingset until you choked it unconscious. The stun gun treatment, to me, sounds sort of like that.

I don't think a stun gun would go very far towards helping you build the dog's trust or gaining its obedience. If you're going to use physical pain as a deterrent to bad behavior, the dog can't associate the pain with you or it won't trust you. For example, if you get an electric fence, you always have to let the dog get shocked on its own. You can't lead it over the line or coax it over, as it will associate you with the pain and doesn't even know what it did wrong. If it gets shocked on its own, it associates the behavior with the pain.

I bet an airhorn would work much better or, if you can yell as loud as I can, just let them have it verbally. They also make whistles which you can't hear but will PETRIFY a dog. Not to mention remote collars which deliver shocks far more mild than a stun gun (with the shock collar, the dog can't tell it was you).

I'm glad the pack has sorted itself out for you. The most important thing to do is to establish yourself as the alpha. Then even if the others start to fight, they usually stop when they realize they've gotten you angry.

Remember that dogs, unlike people, don't WANT to be bad. Even when they fight, the majority of the time they aren't trying to do serious damage.

I've heard that same line several times over the years. NEVER has it come from a dog owner or someone who has been around dogs.

I have a German shepherd that could beat you in a 100 yard dash if you had a 60 yard headstart. My point is that dogs are quicker than you think they are. There is a reason the police use dogs to take out suspects. There actually is less of a chance of the dog getting hurt than the officer getting hurt. Granted, those dogs are somewhat trained, but unless you think you can take on a cop, I wouldn't be so sure you could take on his canine sidekick.

The average weight of a human male is like 150 pounds. The average weight of a full size American-bred shepherd is like 100 lbs. They don't feel pain like you do, and they don't get incapacitated like you do. You don't have claws, and you don't have 3/4" long teeth

Personally, I think you'd be crazy to challenge a decent size dog to a fight with just an itsy bitsy stick.
