Just got back from the Katy Mills Mall. Found that the main entrenced are posted 30.06 as per Texas law. You have to LOOK to find them as they are on a side wall, inside the mall. You have to look quick as the signs are right next to the doorway.

HOWEVER, the Bass Pro Shop is NOT posted at the street entrance, or at the internall entrence to the mall.
WHAT should I do. Is it legal to enter through an unposted area? Should I just avoid the mall completely?

By way of note, the Bass Pro Shop there has quit carrying bullets for reloading, and most powders, and that is why I went there.

Am unsure of the law. But will check the other outside entrance stores for signs.

I would enter through the unposted entrance and if the question ever came up I would never have seen the sign because I never go that way if you catch my drift.

I might do business with Bass Pro Shop, since they aren't posted, but I wouldn't enter the rest of the mall, meaning no business with the other merchants.

I no longer live in Texas, but doesn't the statute also include some verbiage about where the signs must be posted and how visible they must be? Also, are the posted signs in conformity with the specific physical requirements of the statute, such as typeface and font size?

Listen, geniuses... That mall is posted because it is obvious that NONE of the merchants who rent space there want your business.

If you wanna have a hobby for an afternoon, either give all the managers no guns = no money cards, or call 'em up on the phone.

Other than that, just realize that it doesn't matter how you walk into the mall. They still don't want your money.

The type face, verbage and size are proper and legal. BUT, like I said the sign is NOT visable untill you are INSIDE the mall. When you go past the second set of doors the sign is on the wall to your left, about 3-4 feet from the inner wall. Mounted on the left wall as you enter. It is NOT visable from the outside of the mall.

The Grapevine Mills mall can be just as tricky. The 30.06 is huge, and is outside. However, if you're on a direct path to the doors (coming by way of DFW Airport), you don't really notice it unless you look up and to the left. I slipped a few times, not that it turned into a major deal or anything.

According to what I was told last month in my CCW class, the sign must be on the entrance to the building and clearly visible. It must also be posted at EVERY entrance or else you have a legal loophole.

I'm pretty sure that for it to be legal it has to be on the entrance doors, not inside the mall on another door. You could call DPS and get a clarification; if you do, please post here what you learn.

It may be that Bass Pro there is not legally part of the mall from the standpoint of the 30.06 sign, given that it has such a presence separate from the mall. Again, DPS can give you the best perspective.

I hate the Katy Mills mall anyway. It's a migraine headache all packaged up and ready to bite me.

Gotta love the folks that did the Minnesota Carry Laws. Even if a place IS posted with a proper sign, one must STILL be asked to leave and then the person carrying refuses before it really becomes a problem. Secondly, Landlords cannot post, only their individual tenants. So.... any mall that may be posted here in MN isn't in compliance with the law. They can still ask a person to leave. (mall security, etc) I tend to shy away from most malls because I truly loathe crowds, screaming and uncontrolled children, and the general rudeness of people.

It also must be in english and spanish according to the DPS website which links to the concealed carry statutes.

Am I the only one who thinks the OP is trying to circumvent the law/rules here?

You saw the sign posted, and now you look to split hairs as to how you can ignore it. It is pretty simple. Either don't carry at that mall or don't go to that mall.

The LAW in Texas is VERY specific about 30.06. If the signage is wrong, in placement, size, verbage, color, or location it is NOT legal.

My son works there and I pick him up, sometimes after 11:30 at night.

Yes, I know that. But I am lookig for a legal way out in case the worst happenes. And I really want these businesses to FOLLOW THE LAW.

I hate to say this, because I am not telling you to break the law, but if the worst happens, I'm pretty sure that nothing will happen to you when the smoke clears.

Did that make any sense? :p

As far as I understand things, the 30-06 law requires the signage but it also allows for presumed intent, e.g. if the sign is a bit off but a reasonable person could clearly intuit the intent to prohibit the carrying of lawfully concealed weapons, then the signage defects are not a viable defense.

More to the point - why would anyone want to shop somewhere that they're not wanted?

It HAS to be posted in a prominent place. If not, its not an issue. (That would be my argument.) Katy Mills insn't a bad place tho. I've actually had people who work at Bass Pro THANK ME for carrying.
