I bought 11lbs of imr4350 today. Was wondering is this a good powder for the 06 with 150-165 gr bullets. What's better h4350 or imr4350. I couldn't pass up the deal on this powder. Starting over with my 06. Can't get the gun to shoot any better than 2 inch groups with 4064. Varget. 4895. Your thoughts.

My load is a 165 grain SGK BTHP and a near max charge of IMR4350.
It's very versatile. If I were going to have 11 pounds of a rifle powder, that's what I'd want it to be.

I don't know about the comparison to H4350, as I haven't used that one.
I did see some on the shelf of a local store the other day for $42.99 a pound though. lol

How does this bullet performance work on deer

How does this bullet performance work on deer

Fabulously. One of my favorite bullets for deer and, more recently, elk in 30-06. Until last year I was very 180 focused for elk. My notes pair it with 58 grs IMR 4350 in a 24" T/ C Dimension for 2870 fps. Remember that IMR 4350 is more temp sensitive than the H version and, if very cold (teens), will deliver lower velocity than it did at the bench in the summer so may need sighting and POI calibration if using a load developed in July during a cold December.

I've probably shot ten or so deer since I started using this bullet.
Very good results.
I shot a big 10 point this past season, and hit it a little far back and it still anchored him. He went about 30-40 yards with a poor hit. I don't know if that was solely the result of the bullet, but it did the trick wonderfully.
Does usually pile up where they stand. Bucks are a little tougher, but the 2 I've shot with them didn't go far, less than 50 yards in both instances.

I’ve seen it take 200-300rds before a Remington (and others..) barrels to settle down and shoot their best.
For a bolt action rifle in .30/06, it doesn’t really get any better than a Sierra bullet over IMR4350.
My rifles like 59.0gr with 150’s
56.5gr with 165’s.
55.0gr with 180’s.

HOWEVER, DO NOT use IMR4350 in an M1 Garand unless you have an adjustable gas cylinder in it.
Plenty of op-rods have been bent using 4350 and 4831 in M1’s.

57g of IMR4350 and 150-165 bullets go together like meat and potatoes

If your rifle won't shoot small groups with 150 grain bullets and 51 grains of IMR 4064 it probably won't do any better with 57 grains of IMR 4350. The one thing I can tell you to make it better is to anneal your case necks and then reduce the trigger pull on your rifle so you have a light trigger pull without any creep. Consistent case neck tension and a good trigger will help get the group size down.

IMR-4350 has been my go to powder for 270 and 30-06 for over 45 years. A ladder load of 4350 and 165 gr SMK or Nosler BT in a ought six will tell me if the gun is going to shoot. If it doesn't it is going to someone else. If a 180 gr is in the works I might try some IMR-4831.

Hey guys thanks for the information. Im going to start my ladder loads with this powder I will start at
56 gr imr4350 and work my way up. Trying the 165 gr pills first. I've got 20 boxes of 165 NBT. 7 BOXES OF SIERRA GAMEKING BTHP. Looks like they have 100 per box. Also have some SST 165 PILLS also.

Even and old pump 760 in .06 likes 57.5gr 4350 and 150 gr Nosler BTs although it only shrinks the groups a bit.

The gun was a 2" gun from the gitgo with almost every factory round I tried. i started reloading and
I ran Speers, Hornady, Sierra, Rems and ended up with Noslers 150 ballistic tips.

I do shoot more deer with a crossbow now than that pumpgun but it did me well for a lot of years.

I was gifted a National Ordnance 1903A3 that hadnt been fired in 40 years since the owner lost an arm and am starting to work a load for it. (Yes I know NO's are crap parts guns but I like it. Head space was checked) .
He won it in a poker game. I like shooting it. The rem 1944 barrel was bright and shiny when It was cleaned.

I use it religiously in my Savage 110 in -06. 165 grain Sierra Gameking BTSP for deer and 180 grain Nosler Partitions for Elk.

For 150-180 gr bullets it is about as good as it gets. Varget, 4064, and 4895 are better suited for 308 than 30-06 so I'm betting you see an improvement in both accuracy and potential velocity.

I have a slight preference for H4350 simply because it is more stable over a wide range of temperatures. But I've used both in the past and got virtually the same speeds and accuracy with both. Load data is very close, but not interchangeable. You will see velocity loss in cooler temperatures. Expect about 2 fps for every one degree temperature changes. So a load you work up at 80 degrees will be about 100 fps slower at 30 degrees. But that is an issue with most powders. There are only a few that are temperature resistant, and even they see velocity loss in cooler weather. Just much less.

Added, if you can’t find IMR4350 or H4350, RL17 at H4350 charges gives H4350 velocities at IMR4350 accuracy level.
Actually my new favorite powder for 4350 use.
57.0gr gives 2,900+fps from my 24” Colt Lt Rifle, (165gr boat- tail) and 58.0 gives 3,000fps. (Win, Lapua, or Norma brass).
It’s a deer, antelope, and elk stomper...

If you can’t find IMR or H4350, try RL17 or ShootersWorld SW4350....
There’s more than one fish in the ocean...
