I recently read on THR about a company that used to build an AR in 30-06 but was bought by bushmaster and never continued. I enjoy watching Sons of Guns and had a thought. Those guys build crazy things all the time. I want a full power (not garand loads- full power hunting loads) MBR in 30-06. I don't know what action would be best to use but remember they did make an M1A in 30-06 a while ago. My dream MBR would be a MBR with a detach box magazine chambered in 30-06 , shooting 200 gr HPBT, with 800m accuracy, with a flat top upper for scope or ACOG. I'm sure it's possible. What would it cost? -$5000?

I'm in, shouldn't cost anymore than a .308 AR, $1,400.- to $1,600.-. My neighber, a former Army Mark. team member, says the .308 is good to 800 but beyond that use the 30-06.

What is an MBR? Correct usage of acronyms is to spell out the complete words on the first use and only after that use the capitalized acronymn.

Company was Cobb. MBR = main battle rifle IIRC (if I recall ;))

Were all of Berettas BM models chambered in 7.62 NATO or did they ever have any in '06?

I'm guessing the standard .308 type AR receivers are not going to work due to the length of the cartridge, which means you will have to be looking into something bigger than that if it even exists, or have to go with a different platform. I'm guessing BAR will be your best bet.

Well, these guys sell an AR in .338 LM and .300 Win Mag, called the "Bad News:" http://www.onlylongrange.com/badnews.asp

I suppose you could buy a .300 Win Mag version and get a .30-06 barrel made for it. Or you could just settle for a .300 win mag, which allows for even better ballistics than the '06.

Another option would be an M1. There are M1s that are converted to take BAR mags, like this one from Shuff's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd2skyrYr_w

You could have the conversion done by them if they would do it for you. As for making it a "flat top", you could put a Sage EBR stock on it, which they do make for the M1, and use a cantilever mount like the La Rue LT-608 or a Sage cantilever mount. You would need to put an adjustable gas plug in the rifle to be able to shoot the heavier grain bullets you are talking about. But that would do the trick.

Another option would be to get a Saiga 100 in .30-06. Tony Rumore at Tromix did a conversion on one a while back: http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l246/TonyRumore/Rifles/3006RH.jpg

There are folks who have modified BAR mags to fit the Saiga .30-06, but it's apparently a real PITA. So you could do something like that.

ya, i dont think anyones ever made an m1a in '06.

he has to be thinking of the garand.

and on that note, i cant think of a better mbr in 30-06.

I saw the Cobb at SHOT during that outfit's short life. A nice looking rifle of the type, pity it did not survive the double takeover.

My neighber, a former Army Mark. team member, says the .308 is good to 800 but beyond that use the 30-06.

He must have been on the team a long time ago, because it has been a long time since the Army did anything with .30-06. I have seen tv shows with Army shooters and .300 Win Mags and I have been on the range with AMTU shooters and 6.5x284s.

You can do a lot more than 800 yards (or metres for the Francophones) with a good .308.
In your niche, I'd be looking at an AR10 derivative in .308 and a large supply of 185 gr Bergers; the Hybrid if they are on the market yet.

Are you going to reload, or just shoot available supplies? If reload, the 06 has more case capacity and you can hot it up beyond 308 capability. But at that level, it won't go through a Garrand and it will beat on your new toy. Better to go bolt for those kinds of loads.

The .30-06 AR was Cobb Manufacturing as said. I think it was a limited run of 100 for the 100 year anniversary of the .30-06 cartridge.

Somebody please tell me what .30-06 ball ammo does that 7.62x51 ball ammo does not do.

Otherwise, if you want magnum performance, why not just get a real magnum?
Why limit yourself to .30-06?
Are you for real , there is not a better cartridge out there than the tried & true .30-06 !

Cobb was the company.

Springfield made an M1a in 30-06 but stopped producing it years ago- that's what the company rep said when I called. I have heard that they are out there but hard to find.
The reason for the 30-06 and not the mag would be longevity. Mags just burn through barrels much faster. Handloads could easily reach out past 1000 yds- Will from Sons of Guns had a 7.62x39 reaching out that far- problem is that it probably didn't have enough fpe out that far. whatever the 308 does- a 30-06 can clearly do it a little bit better, and with a heavier round.

I must say I do not remember ever seeing, reading, or hearing of a SA M1A in .30-06.
Can you provide a picture, ad or magazine reference?

They made straight M1 Garands for a while; I guess they found they could not compete with CMP for real ones.

Semi auto 30-06's tend to tear up brass.

FN (Browning), Remington and even HK made good semi auto sporting rifles.. I don't think any of them were based on military designs or used factory hi-cap magazines.

The Remington 742/74/7400 has a nicely floated barrel but it heats up after a few shots something fierce.

HK's design was roller locked and had a folding right side charging handle and a traditional wooden stock.

I'd bet the closest you'd get now is the FN-AR, though I think it only uses ten round mags and they are pricey.
