30-06 or 270?

That's right Kachok, +1 ;-) but you forgot to mention old proved 6.5x55 with great BC bullets and sectional density of 200 - 210 grain 30 caliber bullets ;-)

Very true that darn 6.5x55 penatrates like nothing else in the small caliber world. Much less recoil then either the 270 or 06, through and through shots 100% of the time, better BC then 270cal, 7mm or 30 cal hunting bullets. You simply cannot go wrong with a 6.5x55, 260 rem or 6.5 Creedmore, I have been absolutly thrilled with 6.5mm performance. So much so I started leaving my magnums at home. The Sweed (or it's ballistic twins) is the only sissy kicker I would use for black bear, trophy boar or elk without a hint hesetation.

Whatever you like, both will get the job done up to an elk size deer. I find that 30-06 ammo is less expensive than 270 though.

My father was a .270 man killed everything big game animal he hunted with it. BUffalo to Bear, Elk to Sheep, Antelope to Beer, Lion to pigs.

My rifle during this time was a 30-06 and worked as well as dads except he was a more accurate shooter than I,until I improved.

Now and for the past several years I hunt Elk, deer, and antelope with my 25-06 and handloaded cartridges launching 115 grain partition bullets.

With the best premium bullets available today there is not an elk, moose, black bear hog or any other animal on the planet that will ever notice the difference between a 270 or 30-06. If the 270 can't get the job done, neither will the 30-06.

I don't know how many moose and brown bears you've used a 270 and a 30-06 on, but it just hasn't proven true in MY experience on those animials.

The 30-06 with 200NP's clearly outperforms any 270 load i've ever seen used on the biggest animials.

It also out performs the 220 grain loads in a 30-06 too.

Agree with DM, while the 270 can kill larger anamals the basic formula of larger caliber and heavier bullet still rings as true as it ever did. If I were on a hunt and was charged by a bear I would much rather have an 06 loaded with some 200gr+ Partitions, TSX, A frame, or Weldcores then any 270, including my 270 WSM that makes more KE then the 06 ever will. How many cape buffalo hunters do you see playing around with 3100fps zippy guns? Now how many 375s, 416s, and 458s do you see launching 300, 400 and 500gr heavly bonded or solid bullets? Not knocking the small caiber crowd since I hunt with several small calibers myself, but you simply are not going to get that shock kill effect on a mature bear like you get on whitetails, simply too much volume to absorb the pressure wave.
When truly big dangerous game is in the equation I will be using the largest caliber, launching the heaviest bullet that I can shoot accuratly. Anything less is just plain silly. Now mind you I still consider the 06 as being on the small side for dangerous game but a sure sot better then any 270.
Even the late great Jack O'Connor who was the champion of the 270 win sung the praises of the 30-06 on moose and brown bear and the .416 Rigby on larger tougher game.

When I was looking for a rifle I went back and forth and back again trying to decide if I wanted a 7mm-08, 30-06 or .270. I saw no advantage to having the .270 compared to the 30-06. 7mm-08 ammo was 50% more in my area and I do not reload. I bought a .308. And I am happy as can be. I shot a doe at 225 yards with a 150 grain Fusion. She nose dived after taking one step. I never underpowered with my .308. If I had to chose today between a .270 and a 30-06 I would take the 06.

Simply put: "To try to compare the .270with the '06 is a fruitless venture". I own both and love em the same.

.270 win. is deffinitely my choice. I have both, and although the 30-06 offers a million more load types and bullet weights to choose from, the .270 will out shoot them all day long, in my opinion.

I like the .270--but no longer own one--they are capable of fine accuracy but they are finicky.

The .30-06 is just so much more versitile and I now own two---the last 4 or so .30-06's(various brands--Ruger--TC and Browning) that were mine or owned by friends--were sub-MOA shooters right out of the box with cheap Walmart ammo---no muss no fuss--just clean it--mount a scope--slap some Wallyworld ammo in it and dial it in---stupid simple and easy--no tweaking no nothin.

I never had any accuracy issues out of my Savage 270 win or my 270 WSM, both have been more then enough umph for deer, and provide a real nice trajectory. That said if I could only have one or the other the 30-06 is just so much more versitle.

Either will work fine. I find the 06 to have the edge on destruction, and the 270 to be a slightly longer range gun. So many cartridges are so close, plus they get oomphed up as steel improves (1906 30-06 is NOT current 30-06)

308 is short 30-06, 270 is necked down 30-06, 25-06 is even more.

I'm not sure I'll get a 270 or a 25-06 ever, but they'll be fine.

I suppose I'd pick the 30-06, but they're close.
