A friend bought one of those Russian made double rifles in 30-06. We both agreed that it needs round nose boolits to capture the feel of a double. I found load data in my Hornady manual for their 150 grain RN pills. I stuffed some with IMR 4350 in the mid range loading. The book claims 2700 fps on the load I chose. This is about 500 fps faster than the 30-30 velocities this bullet was I assume designed for. Anybody ever use this combo on white tails? I guess I'm a little nervous of the bullet holding together. Hornady must think it will. Before I am flamed for not loading high BC super spritzers or 200 gr monsters, this guy is a white tail hunter who thinks if he can keep 3 shots on a pie plate at 100 yards it is an accurate rifle, and just wants to be able to kill deer at "North Woods" ranges of nose to nose out to at most 100 yards. By the way, it looks like kind of a cool rifle and am looking forward to trying it out.

Hornady #4 shows 150 grain RN #3035 having a useful range of 1,800 - 2,500 FPS.

Then they go ahead and show it used in the .300 Weatherby at 3,500 FPS!
Varmint load maybe!

The #3075 180 grain RN might be a better 30-06 bullet if you can find some.
They list it as 2,400 - 3,200 FPS.

Don't laugh, but I have an early JP Sauer Drilling 12X12X30.06. It makes a great close in, thick woods type gun. Just for laughs, I loaded some 220 round nose Nosler Partitions. Shoots sub MOA at 100 yds. The two bucks I took with it last year did not take a step. One was at 152 yds, the other at 85 yds. I abandoned the "shoot behind the shoulder" shot years ago. Now I prefer a high shoulder shot if I can get it or a straight on point of the shoulder shot. When that bullet breaks 'em down in the front end, they may hobble a few steps but they are not gonna run off. I now shoot that load exclusively in that particular gun. Tonight I cast and loaded some 535 grainers for my Sharps. Yep, I'll deer hunt with it.

^^^^ Read the second sentence rc just posted, if the Weatherby round is smoking' them out there @ 3500 fps, that double rifle won't affect that same bullet at all @ 2700 fps ! A double rifle isn't any harder on a bullet than a single barreled rifle, why would it? The correct terminology is "round nose bullet."

^^Unless it's a cast boolit. At which point, you shouldn't substitute jacketed charges for cast. Need to know whether it's cast or jacketed.

A sturdy 30-06 be it double barrel or bolt gun, loaded with IMR-4350, with a 150 gr. RN jacketed bullet is capable of velocities approaching 3000 fps depending on the powder charge worked up to. Actually, 2900 fps would be a more realistic number, but still, it's not gonna be a problem achieving some typical 06 velocities with that rig.

Yes, I know it's round nose, but round head amused me. Its not the rifle damaging the bullets that concerns me, it is will they hold together when they hit a deer. I am also aware I could get more velocity. My truck is capable of going well faster than what I drive it at also. I quit striving for "faster" in cars, women and cartridges years ago. ;-) JGH, My original thought was 220's. They would have that "Africa" look I was after. Unfortunately, components are a might scarce yet. I had to settle for the 150 Noslers I had on hand. You folks in Alabama just need a little tracking snow and that behind the shoulder shot works fine. Save that shoulder meat.

Yea, that Russian model is regulated by a screw setup at the front end. Settle on a load you like then regulate it. A Holland and Holland it is not, but it also is not a $45,000 piece of gun porn. As a utility rifle? I'm withholding judgement. It is something different in deer camp.

Cool, adjustable, didnt know that, thank you. I have shot deer with 30-30 170 gr flat point bullets in 30-06 Rem 760 gamemaster. I dont remember the brand, other then the diameter of the bullet was .307" Bullet killed the deer.
