I have a deficit of 150gr PSP for my 300 Savage. I have a surplus of 168gr RN for my 30-30. I've loaded them in the 300 and they are accurate AF but I'm a bit hesitant to use them for taking game since I don't know if they will grenade or just mushroom like a boss at higher velocities. I was also looking to use them in the 30-06 but I don't need to at the moment.

What have you learned from your experiences?

Take a 16" bundle of newspaper and wrap it together with duct tape. Make 2 of them. Put them in a 48qt cooler and fill the cooler with water. Let them soak overnight. Take them to the range and put them out on the 100yd line. Staple a target to the face of them & shoot 1 of them with your 300 savage and 30-30. Recover the bullets. Do the same thing with the other bundle using the 300 & 30-06. Recover those bullets and compare.

Agree with above. If intended for the 30-30 and a decent bullet in 30-30, they'll be fine in 300 Savage. But things have got to be pretty thin indeed if a box of Hornady A-Max, or Interlocks are out of reach for hunting.

Times are tough. I can reload these last two bullets I have in to the Savage or sell some plasma for some 30-30 brass. I already have to save on gas and have to hunt at the park in town just after dusk.

Have you looked at throwing spears? Atlatls? Air rifles? Snares? I'd try them before selling myself off.......
But a 170 grain 30-30 bullet at .300 savage velocity should be fine, just remember they'll not fly like a pointy, but they WILL hit hard!

I've taken 2 deer with the Sierra FP 170. One from a .300 Savage, one from a .308. Both were running in the range of .300 Savage speeds, as I download slightly for the wife's .308. This was back in the last component shortage when I found myself short of .30 cal soft points and had to use what the store had. Was a better option than cutting the tips off M2 ball projectiles to make Guadalcanal dum dums. They worked fine. Good expansion and an exit hole on large Northwoods deer, one was quartering away. They had the added benefit of feeding like greased glass through my Savage M99.

I was looking at the Sierra site this week trying to find expansion velocities for the 170 FN. It says as long as they are kept below 2600 fps they should be fine.
