30-30 Powder

I have used H4895 with 165gr Cast bullets and it works very well. I do like AA5744 better with lead bullets.

I used mostly 3031 with jacketed bullets until I tried Hodgdon LVR. It delivers higher velocities, low SD numbers and is very accurate in my Marlin especially with 170gr bullets. I'm going to try it with Cast bullets when I get to it.

I forgot to point out I'm shooting a 125 grain Sierra Sptz. Pro-Hunter. Bullet number #2120. I'm shooting 32 grains of Surplus 4895. I began at 30 grains & worked up .5 at a time. Here's Wednesday's target. 9 shots, 2 different powder charge weights & one sight change. That's a 4" bull. I'm sitting on a bunch of this powder so thus trying to use it.

That looks like minute of deer at 75 yds
The Speer hot core 150gr FN is a good bullet.

It looks like you are going to be able to find a good load using IMR4895. No reason not to go with it.

I used IMR4895 for 150 gr jacketed and 173GR home cast w/GC . It works well.

Edit add. The TC contender in 30-30 liked it also, 150 gr Sierra .

i don't know why but I've loaded with 30gr of IMR 4064 and Sierra 170gr Power Jacket for years. Have not even tested anything else. Now look...I have another project.

Lol, I feel your pain. You will just love LVR with that 170gr bullet you are loading. (Hodgdon Leverevolution)

I worked on brass prep for .30-30 today. Prepped 50-60 pieces of brass. All ready to go tomorrow with the H4895 and the 160 grain FTX and 170 gr Herter RN's.

Now I wonder, should I experiment with different powder too?

BTW - most likely will not purchase more of the FTX's in the future. They are OK, but not amazing.

Hornady uses custom blended LVR powders for each of their different LVR ammo. The one Hodgdon sells is designed for the 30-30. If you loaded those FTX bullets with LVR you can get close to the performance Hornady delivers. Of course you will also achieve good results with 4895, just not as good as with LVR. I'm not chasing the additional velocity just for the speed, I like the flatter shooting that the velocity delivers.
