30/30 revisited

I do love a 30-30 but I download them a fair bit when shooting for fun. For some reason the recoil I get from a full power 160-grain LEVERevolution load is worse than my 308. Can’t say they don’t work though.
Well the gun is kind of light, the stock is a bit narrow, the 160gr FTX ammo is loaded with slower than normal "30-30 powder" that gives higher velocity than most if not all standard 150gr loads. They thump a bit.
I discovered leverevolution is so temperature sensitive, I'm loading up 34gr for fall/winter and 33.7gr for spring and summer. Not that I shoot a lot of 30-30 in the summer.

Well heck; me and my Mod 94 30-30 went old school when I used it. 170gr Hornady FN, some Win 748 powder. Right at 2100 mv over the screens. Happy as a clam with that load.
Why, I was even able to tag a western mule deer in the foothills of Bodie with that rifle/load. Paced it off at thru the sagebrush at 95 yards. All I could have asked for from that 'ol 30-30.
Wonderful rifle. Still have it also.

Best tool for me out past 200 yds is a different rifle. However out to 200 yds if you have a good accurate 30-30, and practice a bunch, go for it!

An old pre-64 30-06 with open sights is a blast too, at closer ranges.

I have killed a lot of deer with the Marlin 336 in 30-30. The 160 gr Leverevolution round was a game changer IMHO.

With that said I have shots over 150 yards where I hunt and started using a .308 AR a couple of years ago. Since I hunt on a small tract of land I need a little more knock down power.
Thats a fine choice, if you want even more WHOOMP try a 270 WSM with 130 gr. Scirocco, 130 Game Kings, or 140 Accubonds.

But some of you seem to be able to shoot dimes at 1000 yards with your .30-30 loaded with 4000 fps frying pans. And are full of hot air who must run their yaps on every thread, never having your own.
What are you trying to say? What is your point? In what way, exactly, does a light loaded 25-06 compare to the same bullet weight and velocity loading from a 30-30? One features a short, fat bullet with a low BC. and SD. The other, just the opposite.
And are full of hot air who must run their yaps on every thread, never having your own.
Look in the mirror. And we're so glad you hunt with "ethics" and don't make stupid shots. Neither do I because I don't hunt.:D

I’ve been kicking around the idea of getting a new Boyd’s stock set for my father-in-law’s old 336 so I can cut it down for my son. I stuck a FastFire III on it last year in a Turnbull mount, but I think he’ll do better with a scope up top, and it’s begging for a Happy Trigger and action job…

Not quite committed yet to which bullet I wanna use yet.

Or it might just keep propping up the back wall of the safe…
I just stoned the 336 trigger and was happy with the results.
I finally got to witness what everyone who hates the Remlins was talking about.
My wife's microgroove 336 needed a little cleanup. That Remlin looked as if someone fitted the parts with a grinder.
Every boy needs to hunt with a Lever action at least once.
The Sierra 150 FN is hard to beat on deer.

If you want a heavy load for bigger game (e.g. elk and moose), Buffalo Bore make a 190 gr load at 2100 fps. However it kills at both ends and in the wallet. See https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1001623687.

It is an interesting blurb with velocities from a number of different 30-30s.
My grandpa moved from Maine to Colorado. He has used his 30-30 to kill moose. He hunted elk and antelope one year and bought a scoped 270. He didn't like being limited to 200 yards. But the old 30-30 obviously has enough to kill if you can hit it.
