Just starting load development for my Mossberg 464 and looking for some bullet and powder suggestions. Deer is the game and prefer jacketed bullets.

I haven't had to reload for 30-30 yet but if you could get your hands on some of the 170 gr sierra fp's if you want a heavier bullet. They also have 150's.

Imr 3031 and speer bullets, makes for a good cheap deer load. The Sierra are very good to but more $.
At one time I thought Speer and Sierra were the same thing. One (Sierra) being of slightly higher quality. Not sure if this is true or not but i've noticed a lot of similarities in some of their stuff from the 80's- early 2000's that has kept me wondering.

Some of these bullets are similar but definitely made in different factory. If you get good accuracy with speer not much reason to use sierras.

True enough. Back when my local area was shotgun/muzzleloader only everyone had a 30-30 something for when we hunted "north of the highway" in rifle country. They all carried the same 170gr sierra handloads in federal brass that dad cooked up for the group. Made for some nice 200yd shootin. Wish dad would have bought me my uncles pre 64 winchester. Instead it was traded for a 30-06 model 700 that never took a deer. The 700 was ruined opening morning the first year we could use rifles here. It folded like a pretzel when my uncles truck got t boned (passenger side) by a drunk driver while our group was going to our favorite patch of deer woods. :(

Not sure about HCL in a 30-30 but here goes, I have not loaded any of these:

I use this chart for some loads and am very pleased with the Lever Revolution powders:

Sierra 170 grain and Hornady 160 grain, both with LR powder:

I have 3 Winchesters, 1 Marlin 336, and a Savage 340. I have one load that is really accurate in all of them. Whether I use Speer, Sierra, or Hornaday 170's I see little difference at 100YDS. 27.5 grains of 3031 is best followed by 30.5 grains IMR 4320. Both crimped into the cannalure with the Lee FCD. Around here a 100 YD shot is the exception with most being 50 to 75 YDS.

I’ve settled on Hornady’s 160gr FTX bullets for my lever gun. I used published load data for IMR 4895 and it’s worked very well. There are several powders you can choose from if they’re in your stock. I have wanted to try the LVR powder but haven’t obtained any yet. Good luck!

I used to load Speer bullets almost exclusively. I never really got that good of accuracy out of my Marlin 336 in .30-30, I thought it was just typical accuracy out of a levergun... but on a fluke I switched to the Winchester Silvertip component bullet (not available any longer, I believe...) and my accuracy doubled. So... bullets do make a difference. The Marlin also preferred the 170's over the 150's.

I've been loading the Hornady 170grn SP bullets over IMR3031 with good results...

For a 94AE with 150gr 748 will be overall more accurate than H322.
The worst/hottest 748 loading will be around the same as the best H322 load you can cut.
Using non magnum primers with the 748.

In our area, small white tails at possibly longer ranges, the Sierra 125 gr. FNHP works very well. It is also potent medicine for a coyote that happens by. The hp opens well at 30-30 velocities and is flatter shooting than the 170’s. 30 grains of 3031 is a good starting point.

Years ago (70s) I was told that the 3031 powder was for 31gr powder in the 30-30 so I've always started my loads there

My son’s Model 94 likes Hodgdon Leverevolution powder and 150 gr Speer or Sierra bullets. Gains at least 100 FPS over other powders, shows no pressure signs with very good accuracy.

Trim your cases for uniform crimp and no buckled necks/shoulders. 170 Sierra has been best for me.

The best velocity I have gotten has been with Leverevolution powder, but the best accuracy I have gotten was with Varget powder and Sierra 150 bullets - 3 of 4 holes touching at 50 yards, with a tang peep sight. I would love to see what it would do with a scope at 100 yards. This was with a Winchester 94. I don't hunt, so can't speak to how they would do with deer.

i just bought my first can of IMR3031 today and have loaded up some 173gr gas checked bullets with 22.5gr 3031, they were sent to me a while back! plus i also loaded up some 165gr plain base coated bullets from MBC at 22.5gr 3031 so gonna see what these will do tomorrow!
