Hi all. I'm thinking of getting a 300 AAC Blackout upper for my S&W M&P15 Sport. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. In my search I found them down to $350-$375 w/o bolt carrier group and charge handle. I can use the bcg and ch from my S&W. Has anyone done business with DS Arms. Thanks.

I have a DSA 556 barrel. Shoots great but a little over gassed

I tried to order an upper from them recently...out of stock or I would have. Everything I read online was of the opinion that they are a good company for budget ar parts. Nothing spectacular, but nothing shady that I could find. Shipping time might be an issue

My opinion for what it is worth. Saving money by using a bolt that has not been head space checked to the barrel is not the best way to economize.

Huldra

I have a Huldra upper in that caliber and its a blast to shoot and VERY accurate.
Hope to hear how your liking that DS.

willymc,

First to you're question/s.

Yes you can use the same BCG and charging handle. I and most of the people I deal with prefer to 'mate' one BCG to one upper. I don't know/think that this is anything more that me being OCD.

To you DSA upper. I ordered one back before the current panic and it took several months to get. Fit and finish, top notch, accuracy the same. I think you will be please with yours, I was with mine.

Thanks for the replies. From what I've read, I really shouldn't be too worried about incorrect headspace, but that little voice in the my head said to at least make sure the bolt closes properly. I ordered a go-gauge, headspace gauge from Brownells. I'm too cheap to buy both go and no go gauges. If my headspace is a "go", I'll try to trade my gauge for a no-go gauge. Well, I'm off to find some ammo without paying both arms and legs.

Shoot it and check your brass for excessive head space. I have built 3 ars and didn't check or have issues with head space.

If you are cheap, and only buying one gauge, get the "field" gauge, this one tells you when the headspace is excessive enough to be a problem and the gun should be removed from the field for repair and not shot.

Well, at least the price for your advice was reasonable. ;) How about posting a link to problems caused by folks' buying AR barrels that haven't been "headspace checked to the bolt??" Inquiring minds are waiting!

I recently bought a stripped Mega upper for $75. Can get a SOTA (already have one on a build) .300 Blackout barrel for about $140. SOTA barrel I have now shoots really great groups.

Update

Just got the bad news from DS Arms:banghead:. There is a 6-8 month backlog on the 300 Blackout uppers. Looks like I'm back to shopping and/or waiting. Anyone have a tip on where else to check for 300 blackout uppers?

sota arms is the other place that seems to have cheap uppers. I just wish they would use a different gas block and muzzle break.

As far as DSA goes, I have a blem lower from them that looked great, but the stag mag release button didn't quite fit. They swapped it right out for me and included a dpms button that worked great. They said it was probably an issue of tolerance stacking. Thanks for letting me know about lead times though, I was looking at getting one myself.

I was looking at SOTA Arms. 2-3 week turn around time and a decent price. Chrome moly standard contour barrel with M4 feedramps. I also looked at Model 1 Sales. They have a 16" C.A.R. for a good price. Pardon my ignorance but what is the difference between an AR15 and a C.A.R.?

I think for model1 it means it's a carbine gas system as opposed to rifle or midlength. but it would not be the first time I was wrong.

In Model 1's the ONLY offering they have is a 16 inch carbine barrel, though you can opt to have it fluted.

Thanks! That helps. So, the C.A.R. just relates to the position of the gas port on the barrel and length of gas tube. The front sight base or gas block will be farther back from the muzzle on a C.A.R. upper?

I don't have any experience with the 300 but I do have a DS Arms upper that I bought a couple of years ago. Mine was my first build and I was on a budget so for what I got I am happy. It is a little over gassed but I can deal with it for my first. I did have a problem where my forward assist got blown out of the upper. I picked up the parts, went home and called them and was told to send it back in which they sent me a replacement. So I am definitely pleased with their service.

I ordered a ZM4 upper w/out bolt carrier group from DSArms on 19Dec12. Have not rec'd it yet [they still have my credit card info on file] and have been promised four times in the last six months that it would be "shipped within three-four weeks."

They make excellent FAL clones but they seem hopelessly out of their element where ARs are concerned. I suspect they are shipping uppers to newer customers at higher prices than the one promised me. Not my idea of good business practice...and I'll not trust them again.

Without substantiation this means nothing. A lot of companies are way behind in shipping.
