300 Blackout for Deer

I hunt with my ARs, and with my bolt action 308W. Last year I shot a 200# 8 point at 163 yards and dropped him in his tracks with a slight shattering to shot with a 64gr Winchester PP. Two days later I shot a 150# doe at 100 yards with my 308 and she ran 200 yards, or about 50 yards past where she ran out of blood. I use my 7.5" 300Blk pistol for spot and stalk hog hunting but 50yrs is a long shot for me with it. My sons use either the 16" blackout or my 44mag carbine but they know that 100yards is the max with either. They all seem to work well within their limits. I pick my shots a hell of a lot more carefully with the 223 or 300blk. The 308 has the reach out and touch em to get out there but the trade off is in noise/recoil especially in a blind. You just have to know your limitations and stick with them.

I guess that it all boils down to is this: (And recognize that I am going to resort to hyperbole, so don't pitch a fit.)

There are some hunters who couldn't take a cottontail cleanly with a .458 Win Magnum, and other hunters who could take an elephant cleanly with a .22 LR.

A man needs to know his limits, his equipment, and his game.
